Me Too

Me Too

71f0003e.gif

Simple to say.

Easy to dismiss.

Immeasurably difficult to accept.

To some surreal and unfathomable.

To others far too real.

Painful to experience.

Emotionally, physiologically, mentally and personally it holds those affected tightly within its grasp.

Devastating to live through.

It saddens, lingers, festers and comes in waves.

It shocks our very senses.

It may cause pain, guilt, reflection, loneliness and isolation.

And in a framework of sorts, it comes with denial, anger, bargaining, depression and through healing maybe even acceptance in time.

It is not linear as in a series of stages one must incrementally work through.  It becomes an all encompassing reality.

And yet we must encourage those in need to seek help or support those whom we love and are affected in whatever manifestation it presents itself.

That there is hope and others who are there to share their experiences and work through the challenges.

This issue has no geographic boundaries.  It indiscriminately targets.  It hides and lurks in the background until it arises and confronts us personally, individually and yes collectively.

Yet it is real.

Whether personally affected, tangentially connected or living through this personally or with a loved one we have to do better at standing up and saying:  “I am mad as hell, and I am not going to take this anymore.”

Yes, Me Too.

I am glad Glen Campbell engaged his farewell tour while he was conscious enough to perform and yet already having his life robbed by Alzheimer's. It served to spread far greater awareness about this curse of a disease. Alongside Parkinson's it is a dark thief that I hope the medical community eventually find the answer for. Death and losing a loved one is an awful experience by itself but to watch someone die to all that is key to existence while their body lives is an added cruelty.

I am approaching that vision of there isn't as much time left as is behind. I am on the back nine of life. More of my family and friends are hearing the doorbell ring of life's health challenges. I know the natural process of life and death are a part of our existence, but to make sense of it is quite another thing. I only know my own experiences and can reflect them. One in particular was my mother-in-law. Dementia took her down a dreadful path. There was no plug to pull or considered. But i know the family gathered around her and supported her existence and made her feel at home for more than three years. I am sure if we look at her and try and find dignity within that three years we wouldn't find it. But through her experience and the family's belief in supporting one another we witnessed to so many people the dignity of family and the courage to engage with one another even in the toughest of times. The notes and comments my wife got from staff, other families who had loved ones in the facility, told me we impacted the way families see each other, the way staff treated patients in these types of facilities. My Mother-in-laws challenging walk home was a shared experience that impacted others, she witnessed through us to people who had lost hope in humanity. The process of going home is never an easy journey, but we have the opportunity to show others that this journey is guaranteed and that no matter the labels love does conquer the feelings of death, and celebrates the many people who are touched by the person's life. I don't remember my mother-in-laws road but rather here life and those she impacted both in living and dieing. I Too hope i can have the courage to the end to share life with others, regardless of how rough the road gets.
