Seventy years ago, Julia Wells planted a tree in her yard. I suppose she wanted quick growth to shade her house. She got it in the form of a Silver Maple. Whoooooosh, it grew.

Julia Wells moved on either to the nursing home or some kind of care, and the Silver Maple remained. It surely outlived her (as trees most often do).  Perhaps she lives on in the soul of the tree.

The house changed hands a few times; then I plunked down here. The tree was forty when I bought the house. I didn’t care for it at all. I wanted to remove it ten years after I bought the house. But a neighbor, Francis Remons, loved the tree in my yard and strategically placed a shed in place that made the tree difficult to remove. You can see it in the picture. I assumed I would need access to his yard to take down the tree.  Francis Remons (Perhaps he and the soul of the tree are welded as well.) went the way of Julia Wells 12 years after I moved here, and I approached his executor about the removal of the shed.

"Suuuuuure," he said.

The house was viewed by prospective buyers who wanted the shed to remain.  I'm sure the tree rejoiced.

The tree thrived and grew enormous. It had four huge trunks. One fell during a Mothers’ Day Nor’easter. (The shed was damaged in the incident.  wheeeee.)The neighbors are up in arms; calling the city and my insurance company. My mind screeches back to my tiff with Francis Remon over the placement of the shed. Damned tree.

Despite the animosity that has grown with the tree, I must admit it is magnificent. As it has matured through the years, it has grown on me. My urge is to save the remaining trunks, but I know that is not to be. Luke Brown linked compassion to insurance with his post: https://www.bebee.com/producer/@luke-brown-florida/insurance-and-compassion. In a compassionate move, my insurance company will take down the tree to relieve me of my clamoring neighbors.

Neighbors: 1

Tree: 0.

I am grateful for my insurance company’s move towards compassion. I’ve always grunted and moaned and groaned over the cost of insurance. I had to sign off on the contract to take the tree down this morning. The bill is as astronomical as the tree. My mind mumbles silent thanks.  The tree dies on June 27th.  No doubt its death will be brutal and difficult.

In all the years I’ve known the tree, it has seemed friendly. True, it sucked what it needed from the ground leaving little possibility for a decent lawn, but it told me of Spring's arrival every year with its budding leaves.

I will miss that.

Trees reminds you of the arrival of spring. I felt sad for the tree and the memories attached to it over the years. I know how you feel Joyce \ud83d\udc1d Bowen Brand Ambassador @ beBee

I know the feeling. I believe that the trees understand us, even while they look down on us. But every once in a while we need to turn over a new leaf and branch out!

As Pascal Derrien says, trees don't talk much ..... but hey, they do make trunk calls. Sometimes I just wish they'd leaf me alone. 🤣😂

Trees have many devotees, Sheds but one supporter, But when branches fall, then please, Cut those limbs back shorter. Safety first means tree's dispersed!
