This Nutrition Educator position is assigned to Region 5 of the Office of Public Health and Functions of the special supplemental food program for Women, Infants and Children (WIC) to assist WIC participants in acquiring nutrition knowledge, skills and behavior necessary for achieving adequate diets.
Job Duties Include:
75% WIC Certification/Recertification and Laboratory Duties
Educates WIC program participants and/or primary caretakers, when applicable, regarding general nutrition, the purpose of WIC program, participation guidelines and patient rights, the rationale for specific food items in the various food packages, and the appropriate use of the EBT cards.
Collects anthropometrics and hemoglobin from WIC participants in cert/recert clinics and inputs this information into LAWIN record. Travels to other WIC clinics in the region for FBI, Cert/Recert clinics as needed. Conducts monthly outreach visits. Refers WIC participants to other food assistance programsin the area such as food stamps, etc.
20% Other Duties
Inventories and orders educational equipment and supplies. Selects and requisitions nutrition education materials; prepares and distributes educational posters, pamphlets, fliers and other items needed for outreach. Assist Nutritionist and Health Educator in maintaining up-to-date returned formula and breast pump logs.
5% Training and Disaster Duties
Attends quarterly and annual nutrition workshops; prepares a summary report when requested by supervisor. Attends other seminars, workshops, in-service training, and continuing education programs as required. Prepare daily and monthly reports. Keep track of spending of Nutrition Education money. Work post disaster to ensure that WIC services are delivered in an efficient manner.
Reports to work for duty, as assigned, immediately following a disaster which may include working in shelters and providing nutrition services to evacuees and field staff.
Performs any other additional duties not listed, but necessary, for the work unit or to insure the overall quality of agency services.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
One year of clerical, health related public contact, food service, or extension service work.
SUBSTITUTIONS:
College training may be substituted for the required experience on the basis of thirty semester hours for the one year of experience.
Vocational training in a dietetic assistant curriculum at a recognized vocational school may be substituted for the required experience on a month for month basis.
