The clinic has many years of experience in psychiatry and psychotherapy: In 1925, one of the first psychiatric clinics in a general hospital in Germany was founded here.

In 2004, the Clinic for Psychiatry, Psychotherapy and Psychosomatic Medicine became an academic teaching hospital of the University of Duisburg-Essen.

Today, the clinic fulfills a care mandate for the northern part of Essen with over inhabitants.

It is divided into an inpatient area with 140 beds, a partial inpatient area (day clinic) with 40 treatment places, and an outpatient area (psychiatric outpatient clinic).

The day clinic and psychiatric outpatient clinic are jointly managed by Philippusstift and a cooperation partner. In addition, the clinic is connected to a social psychiatric center to ensure community-based psychiatric care.

In the near future, the plan is to relocate the inpatient psychiatry to newly designed areas in the Altenessen district that meet the requirements of modern psychiatry.
