    POSITION SUMMARY:


    Under the clinical supervision of the Department of Psychiatry's Integrated Behavioral Health service, the Integrated Behavioral Health Clinician works as a member of both the Hematology and Oncology Departments.

    Under Hematology, the IBH clinician will work for The Center for Sickle Cell Disease, the largest Sickle Cell Center in New England caring for adults and children.

    As an inherited disease, the patients have complex psychosocial needs which stem from chronic medical condition across their lifespan.

    In the United States it is estimated that Sickle Cell Disease occurs among about 1 out of every 365 Black or African-American births and among about 1 out of every 16,300 Hispanic-American births.

    Under Oncology, within the Cancer Care Center at BMC, the oncologists care for patients with malignant and non-malignant blood disorders and cancer.

    The Center also offers multidisciplinary programs for treatment of lung cancer, breast cancer, cancers of the head and neck, gastrointestinal cancers, and skin cancers.

    Many patients experience depression or anxiety living with sickle cell disease or cancer disorders.


    The IBH clinician will serve as a member of the multidisciplinary Sickle Cell team and the Cancer Care Center and collaborate to ensure behavioral health needs of the patients are met.

    Clinical responsibilities for services include, but are not limited to, conducting psychosocial assessments, individual therapy, crisis interventions, leading groups, formulating psychosocial diagnoses and treatment plans, and implementing effective, evidence-based treatments for patients and family members.

    The clinician will also provide education/teaching regarding behavioral health conditions and treatment to Hematology and Oncology staff and providers. The role is hybrid.

    Requirements


    • Requires Master's Degree from an accredited school of Social Work or Mental Health Counseling and experience with trauma-informed care.
    • Previous experience in Integrated Behavioral Health or Medical Setting preferred.
    • Previous experience with sickle cell disease or chronic health or cancer conditions preferred.
    • Requires level of knowledge of Social Work process and community resources and agencies in relation to health, illness, and disability, and social determinants of health.
    • Advanced interpersonal skills necessary to interact effectively with various healthcare professionals, to develop and maintain effective therapeutic relationships with patients and families.
    • Cultural sensitivity and comfort with a diverse patient population. Cultural humility is very important.
    • Bicultural/Bilingual competency a plus. Haitian Creole language proficiency a plus
    • Ability to work in an interdisciplinary team.
    • Computer literacy with ability to use standard word processing, spreadsheet programs and e-mail (i.e. MS Word, Excel, Outlook) and web browsers.
    • Must be comfortable in a fast paced and dynamic work environment (sense of humor is valued).
    Other Responsibilities


    • Attendance at IBH and Psychiatry meetings and in-service education program offerings through the Department of Psychiatry.
    • Obtaining continuing education as necessary to maintain licensure.
    • Utilizes hospital's behavioral standards as the basis for decision making and to facilitate the hospital's mission.
    • Follows established hospital infection control and safety procedures.
    • Maintains patient confidentiality according to hospital policy. Practices professional discretion when determining the inclusion of any patient information into medical record or department clinical record notes.
    • Documents each patient encounter in the medical record or the Department clinical record concurrently according to Department policies.
    • Performs other duties as needed.
    May be requested to provide coverage in other clinics as assigned

    JOB REQUIREMENTS

    EDUCATION:


    Requires Master's Degree from an accredited school of Social Work or school of Mental Health Counseling or related field as determined by the Board of Registration of Allied Mental Health and Human Services Professions or National Certified Counselor (NCC) preparing for licensure as an LMHC and required to obtain LCSW within 6 months of hire date.


    CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS REQUIRED:
    Requires a current Massachusetts Licensed Certified Social Worker (LCSW), Licensed Independent Clinical Social Worker (LICSW), or Licensed Mental Health Counselor (LMHC) or obtain Licensed Certified Social Worker (LCSW) with 6 months of hire date ) or Professions or National Certified Counselor (NCC) preparing for licensure as an LMHC


    EXPERIENCE:

    • Previous experience in Integrated Behavioral Health or Medical Setting preferred.
    • Requires level of knowledge of Social Work process and community resources and agencies in relation to health, illness, and disability, and social determinants of health

    KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:

    • Advanced interpersonal skills necessary to interact effectively with various healthcare professionals, to develop and maintain effective therapeutic relationships with patients and families
    • Cultural sensitivity and comfort with a wide range of racial and ethnic populations. Cultural competence is very important.
    • Bicultural/Bilingual competency a plus.
    • Ability to work in a multidisciplinary team.
    • Computer literacy with ability to use standard word processing, spreadsheet programs and e-mail (i.e. MS Word, Excel, Outlook) and web browsers.
    • Must be comfortable in a fast paced and dynamic work environment (sense of humor is valued).
