General Purpose:


  • The Seasonal Event Coordinator will support the department of Business and Workforce Development with their summer programming and activations on the Church Street Marketplace as well as the BTV Market in City Hall Park. The Church Street Marketplace District is a business improvement district created in 1981 that includes the public street and all properties that abut Church Street between Pearl and Main Streets. Each year we host some 1.5 million visitors to shop, eat, meet and greet, mark milestones, or just pass the time of day. The Marketplace hosts 60+ events annually including signature events like the Annual Sidewalk Sale, Festival of Fools, and Jazz Festival. The BTV Market is an artist and prepared food market that runs Saturdays 11am to 3pm from June through September. The BTV Market serves as an incubator program for small art and food businesses and includes music, games, splashpad fun, and more
  • The Seasonal Event Coordinator will work closely with the Business and Workforce Development Assistant Director, Marketplace Coordinator, and Projects and Event Coordinator to plan, host, and execute a number of public events and programs from June through September. In this role, they will get handson experience in managing events, collaborating with businesses and event partners, setup and breakdown of event equipment, and project management.

Essential Job Functions:


  • Load in, staff, and load out events as assigned specifically Wednesdays through Saturdays.
  • Oversee the operation of "Marketplace Summer" a series of activations and events in downtown Burlington June
  • September. This includes loadin and loadout of vendors, setup and breakdown of tents, putting out games and activities, helping to provide access to utilities, engaging with customers, and troubleshooting any dayof issues.
  • Assist the operation of the BTV Market in City Hall Park. The temporary event coordinator will assist with the loadin and loadout of vendors, setup and breakdown of merchandise tent, setting out games and activities, providing utilities to vendors, engaging with customers, and troubleshooting dayof issues.
  • Attend event planning meetings with relevant partners, and support event planning and logistics. Assist with scheduling and layouts, and track program attendance.
  • Work outdoors, handle physical tasks, and conduct work with professionalism and compassion for everyone involved.
  • Contribute to effective relationships with thirdparty vendors, organizations, cultural and community organizations, and Marketplace personnel.
  • Other assigned duties related to the Business and Workforce Development team's mission, and support of partners or stakeholders.
  • Work will generally take place outdoors, and the position will require a significant amount of time on the Marketplace and in City Hall Park in all weather conditions. Indoor office time will also be part of the schedule. Some remote work may be possible on nonevent days.
  • Position will be up to 30 hours per week. Position will be Wednesday
  • Saturday. Must be available to work evenings and Saturdays.

Qualifications/Basic Job Requirements:


  • Ability to actively support City diversity, equity, and cultural competency efforts within stated job responsibilities and work effectively across diverse cultures and constituencies.
  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion as evidenced by ongoing trainings and professional development
  • Entry level position for a person 18 years or older. High School Diploma or equivalent required. Preference for an associate's degree in related field or equivalent of at least 2 years of event experience.
  • Strong interest in community development, placemaking, or event management.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Demonstrated skill in creative problem solving, cando attitude, and staying calm under pressure.
  • Strong attention to detail.
  • Experience working in a diverse and inclusive organization is a plus.
  • Computer proficiency, especially in Google for Work (Drive, Docs, Sheets, Slides, Gmail) and Microsoft (Excel, PowerPoint, Word).
  • Ability to work outside in all types of weather, kneel or stand for periods of time, and be able to lift 50 pounds, which are all needed for onsite events.
