Position Summary
The primary purpose of this position is to coordinate and support molecular studies of of the gut microbiome of patients with cancer in the Andermann Lab at UNC-CH.
The research technician will perform laboratory tasks related to shotgun metagenomic sequencing (DNA extraction, library prep/PCR, pooling of samples) and also will perform the duties of a study coordinator including the creation and coordination of the Cancer Center Microbiome Biorepository and Database (consenting of patients, updating database, collecting samples).
The Research Coordinator will be responsible for both clinical research and laboratory research duties.These include performing duties related to the coordination of moderately complex aspects of two or more clinical studies and the basic lab work pertinent to the collection, processing, and sequence library preparation of stool samples.
The Research Coordinator will work under close direction of the principal investigator, Dr.Tessa Andermann, in collaboration with other labs and PIs as part of the Lineberger Cancer Center and the Division of Infectious Diseases.
Minimum Education and Experience RequirementsDemonstrated possession of the competencies necessary to perform the work.
Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
Excellent communication skills with regulatory teams, clinical teams, bioinformaticians, and PIs
Extensive knowledge of molecular biology and microbiology laboratory techniques and their applications
Candidate needs data management skills and to be familiar with the literature in the gut microbiome of patients with cancer.
Prefer candidate with experience in molecular biology (execution of the molecular work requires familiarity with malaria and tropical diseases); experience with large datasets; experience with PCR, qPCR, DNA extraction and next generation sequencing library preparation.
Physical ability to perform varied tasks such as fine motor skills to do challenging culture and molecular techniques. Mobility and strength to store and access research samples, reagents and supplies.
