AB Deckhand


An Able Seaman (AB) is a seaman and member of the deck department of a ship with more than two years' experience at sea and considered "well acquainted with his duty".

An AB may work as a watchstander, a day worker, or a combination of these roles.

This is a Non Exempt Position


GENERAL PURPOSE


Under direct supervision performs general tasks aboard tugboats, crew boats, work boats and barges to handle lines, perform light maintenance and other boat related activities.


DISTINGUISHING CHARATERISTICS

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Under the direction of the boat captain handle lines to moor, unmoor; make tow and break tow for company boats and barges. Deckhands will also be asked to assist the boat captain by providing speed and distance estimates when underway on tugboats and barges.
  • Under the direction of the boat captain or maintenance staff performs light maintenance to company equipment that includes cleaning, stowing of equipment, vessel cleaning, stocking and other general boat related tasks.
  • Stocks general cleaning supplies and makes boat ready to get underway. This includes checking fluid levels on engines, starting generators and switching power to boat from shore to ship. While the boat is underway, keeps equipment organized, lines properly stored and boat clean and clear of deck hazards.
  • Deckhand is an "on call" position. Deckhands are required to maintain close communication with the operations staff to ensure a rapid response to the needs of Pacific Tugboat Service customers.

Requirements:


QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge of:


  • Safe boating practices and general seamanship.
  • Basic understanding of line handling and line safety.
  • Must be able to understand verbal direction in English for safety purposes.

Ability to:


  • Take direction and complete routine tasks.
  • Work a flexible schedule including days at sea.
  • Exercise independent judgment and initiative within established guidelines.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those encountered in the course of the work.
  • Work on a moving and uneven platform.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
Education, Training and Experience:

Basic boating experience.

Licenses; Certificates; Special Requirements:

Transportation Workers Identity Credential, MMD

Ability to obtain DBIDS for military base access

STCW ( Standard of Training Certification and Watchkeeping ) is preferred.
