PURPOSE OF POSITION:


Under the general direction of the Associate Executive Director of Nursing/Psychiatric and/or the Associate Director of Nursing provides staff education activities to nursing personnel and to other disciplines as required to meet competency standards.

The Assistant Director collaborates with nursing leadership and other administrative staff in assessment, determination, and evaluation of staff education activities and makes recommendation for changes based of program needs, regulatory requirements, and patient/staff requirements.

This position also provides education and acts a resource to the Department of Behavioral Health upon request of the Director of Psychiatry.

The Assistant Director position has a functional relationship to his/her peers within the Patient Care Services and participates in special projects as assigned/required.


AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITIES:


I. Clinical Activities Associated with the Nursing Process**•Participates in the formulation of nursing philosophy, goals and standard of nursing practices for the psychiatric nursing service.

  • Formulate Objectives with nursing staff and other members of the health team to improve patient care
  • Review, records and/or develops nursing documentation tools.
  • Participates in the developmental of standard of care
  • Develops and implements patient educational tools and activities.
  • Demonstrates current knowledge of growth and development, theories of human behavior, psychopathology and psychiatric nursing concepts and principles.

II. Education**•Plan for and coordinates an evidence-based orientation program for all new nursing personnel assigned to the service.

  • In collaboration with Assistant Director of Nursing/Managers and Head Nurses to ensure new employees are meeting standards of practice and provide additional education or training as necessary.
  • Collaborates with Head Nurse and Assistant Director of Nursing in the probationary evaluation of new nursing personnel.
  • Plan an ongoing evidence-based staff education program based upon assessed needs, quality improvement findings, and recommendations of Assistant Director of Nursing/ Managers and Service Administration.
  • Provides creative learning experiences for staff to improve competence through formal teaching and small group conferences.
  • Reviews learning experiences and develops measurable outcomes to monitor improvements in performance.
  • Act as a resource for staff on regulatory standards.
  • Collaborates with the assigned staff education liaison for the provision of educational programs.
  • Functions as a resource to nursing students from Affiliated School of Nursing.
  • Conducts mock code drills and participates in assessment and development of staff competence in managing medical emergencies.
  • Participates in the Patient Education and Nurse Educator Committee.
  • Attends at least one continuing Education Seminar yearly.
  • Encourages ongoing staff development by identifying and posting staff informational materials regarding continuing education or conferences.
  • Adheres to customer services standards as a role model.
  • Fosters cultural change process through initiation of and participation in forums that encourage open discussion and where staff input is sought, valued and utilized as appropriate in the decision-making process.
  • Other duties as assigned.

III. Consultation**a. Collaborates with other disciplines in planning and implementing staff education activities within the service.
b. Annually views, revises, and or develops specialty policies and procedures in collaboration with Behavioral Health Nursing Leadership.
c. Provides consultation and education to general care staff on management of Behavioral Health patients.
d. Functions as a resource for continuous quality improvement and Provides feedback to ADNs/Managers in assessment of new employee compet
