General Summary


The Outreach and Communications Specialist for the Warmline is responsible for reaching out to individuals or groups who may benefit from the services provided by the warmline.

They develop and implement outreach strategies to increase awareness of the warmline and its benefits, and they collaborate with community organizations to promote the warmline and its services.

Ultimately, their goal is to outreach to Orange County Residents and offer our support services.


Primary Duties

  • Participate in community outreach events to actively promote the warmline.
  • Develop and implement outreach strategies and content to increase visibility and promote the services of the Warmline.
  • Collaborate with community organizations, mental health agencies, and other stakeholders to identify opportunities for outreach and partnerships.
  • Conduct outreach activities, such as presentations, webinars, and community events, to increase awareness and promote the services of the Warmline.
  • Preserve relationships with community partners and stakeholders to strengthen the Warmline's standing within the community.
  • Maintain accurate records, reports, and statistics related to outreach activities and volunteer engagement.
  • Provide support to the Outreach Manager and Outreach team.
  • Provide support to the Warmline leadership team with staff communications.

General Duties

  • Must be available to work inperson and some weekends.
  • Provide appropriate communication skills while offering compassionate listening and peer support in operating the WarmLine for a minimum 4 hours per week.
  • Ensure a present and attentive approach, adhering to the guidelines, to maintain the efficiency and effectiveness of our peer support service on the WarmLine
  • Exhibit a strong understanding of peer ethics and maintain appropriate boundaries while providing empathetic support and fostering a safe environment for individuals seeking mental health support and resources.
  • Complete specific assignments as requested by the WarmLine Operations Manager and/or Program Directors.
  • Participate in training and professional development: Attend regular training sessions and professional development opportunities to enhance knowledge and skills related to crisis intervention and support.

Experience & Education Requirements

  • Personal mental health lived experience and openness to disclose to Warm Line callers and during counselor training is a requirement for this position.
  • Minimum 2 years experience as a peer counselor, peer specialist, or similar (either paid or volunteer), ideally within a nonprofit setting.
  • Minimum of 2 years of experience as an outreach and communications specialist or related role.
  • Associates and/or Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university (preferred).
  • Strong communication and social media skills
  • Experience maintaining the confidentiality of sensitive information, understanding of confidentiality practices

  • Familiarity with the mental health recovery movement, peer support model, and local resources.
  • Proficiency in Google Office Suite, use of a multiline phone system, tech systems (Zoom, iCarol, NICE) and basic troubleshooting.
  • Demonstrate working knowledge of the mental health, substance use, and suicide prevention services specific to hotline or emotional support warmline mental health services.
  • Bilingual (English/Vietnamese, English/Spanish, English/Farsi or English Korean a plus)
  • Support the values and mission of NAMI OC as related to employment.
  • Ability to pass a background clearance.
