About the Department:

New Student and Family Programs (NSFP) is a vital department within the University Life (UL) Division, focused on enhancing engagement, fostering community, establishing tradition, and improving retention. The department achieves these objectives through undergraduate orientation and new student programs, parent and family outreach, and leadership development.

Emphasizing the transition to university life, the New Student and Family Programs office offers innovative programs and services to help George Mason University students and their families adjust socially and academically.


About the Position:

The NSFP is looking to fill two Assistant Director positions to support the implementation of New Student Orientation for a large number of new students and guests each year, both in summer and winter.

As part of the NSFP team, the Assistant Directors play a crucial role in guiding various division initiatives and representing the vibrant George Mason community.

This role may require occasional evening and weekend work, especially during summer.


Responsibilities:

The Assistant Directors of Orientation play a key role in developing and coordinating orientation programs, with a focus on the following responsibilities.

Each Assistant Director has a specific focus, and their responsibilities are outlined below.

  • Assisting in developing a comprehensive orientation program and coordinating student programs for orientation;
  • Acting as a departmental liaison for key orientation stakeholders;
  • Developing, training, recruiting, supervising, and evaluating the Student Coordinator team, in collaboration with other Assistant Directors;
  • Contributing to the NSFP philosophy on intern and student coordinator development;
  • Cosupervising, selecting, training, and evaluating student employees (graduate and/or undergraduate) and interns;
  • Supervising additional undergraduate and graduate staff as needed;
  • Participating in the training and development of NSFP student leader teams;
  • Supporting the planning and execution of unit initiatives and programs;
  • Assisting in developing and implementing unit student and family programming;
  • Contributing to unit-driven initiatives such as assessment and student leader experience;
  • Demonstrating commitment to NSFP and Mason through committee involvement and project development;
  • Serving on university committees and fulfilling other related tasks assigned by the Director and UL leadership;
  • Attending professional meetings and maintaining active memberships in professional organizations.

Assistant Director #1 (Logistics focus):

  • Coordinating and implementing in-person and virtual orientation logistics;
  • Managing communication and information delivery for orientation and new student programs;
  • Maintaining and updating all content for online orientation components.

Assistant Director #2 (Student Leader focus):

  • Assisting in coordinating student-centered, student-led program components;
  • Developing protocol and managing overnight orientation housing accommodations;
  • Supervising the Patriot Leader team and overseeing orientation programming;
  • Handling recruitment, selection, training, and evaluation of the Patriot Leader team;
  • Managing the Student Leadership budget in collaboration with the NSFP Director.
