    Duties

    Major Duties include but are not limited to:

  • Advising Park Superintendent on all park resource management issues.
  • Develop and manage a resource management program that follows all applicable law, policy, regulation, and guidance.
  • Prepares, and or coordinates the preparation of environmental assessments (EA)s for park projects in compliance with the Natural Environmental Policy Act. Ensures NEPA requirements are implemented and followed through for all park projects and planning actions.
  • Manages formulation and execution of divisional budget. Participates in the development of yearly fiscal management programs in establishing park priorities and necessary funding based on established park requirements and long-range program goals.
  • Assigns, directs and reviews interpretive work assignments. Plans, schedules, and coordinates work operations.
  • This is an interdisciplinary position which may be filled in any of the following occupational series: Chief of Resource Management (Historian), GS , Chief of Resource Management (Archeologist), GS , Chief of Resource Management (Biologist), GS or Chief of Resource Management (Museum Curator), GS Please visit for additional park information.

  • Selectee will be required to participate in the Direct Deposit Electronics Funds Transfer Program.
  • You will be required to operate a government (or private) motor vehicle as part of your official duties; a valid driver's license is required. You will be required to submit a Motor Vehicle Operator's License and Driving Record. You must also submit (within a State sealed envelope or submitted directly by the State authorities), and at your own expense, all certified driving records from all States that disclose all valid driver's licenses, whether current or past, possessed by you.
  • You will be required to wear a uniform and comply with the National Park Service uniform standards. A uniform allowance will be provided.
  • You may be required to work on-call, evenings, weekends, holidays, overtime and shift work.
  • You will be required to complete a one-year trial period.
  • You may be required to travel overnight away from home up to 4 nights per month. You must obtain a government charge card for travel purposes.
  • You may be required to complete training and obtain/maintain a government charge card with travel and/or purchase authority.
  • You must obtain and maintain certifications as an Agreements Technical Representative (ATR) and Contracting
    Officers Technical Representative (COTR). You must obtain within 6 months on duty and maintain for duration of employment.
  • The position to which you will be appointed is subject to a financial disclosure reporting requirement and you will be required to complete a new entrant Confidential Financial Disclosure Report (OGE Form 450) within 30 days of your appointment.
  • Applicants must be at least (1)18 years old or (2) at least 16 years old and: (a) Have graduated from high school or been awarded a certificate equivalent to graduating from high school; or (b) Have completed a formal vocational training program; or (c) Have received a statement from school authorities agreeing with their preference for employment rather than continuing their education; or (d) Be currently enrolled in a secondary school and either work only during school vacation periods or work part-time during the school year under a formal student employment program.

    All qualifications must be met by the closing date of this announcement-05/23/2024-unless otherwise stated in this vacancy announcement.

    Credit will be given for all appropriate qualifying experience. To receive credit for experience, your resume MUST clearly indicate the nature of the duties and responsibilities for each position, starting and ending dates of employment (month/year), and the resume must reflect full and/or part-time or total number of hours worked (i.e., work 40+ hours a week, rather than indicating full-time). If part-time, the hours must be annotated to be able to pro-rate the amount of qualified specialized experience.

    BASIC REQUIREMENT:

    To qualify for one of these job series, you must meet one of the basic qualification requirements below by close of the announcement:

    Basic Requirements for Historian, GS-0170:
  • Have successfully completed a degree in history; or related field that included at least 18 semester hours in history.
  • Or, have a combination of education and experience in courses equivalent to a major in history, or a major in a related field that included at least 18 semester hours in history, as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.
  • Basic Requirements for Archeologist, GS-0193:
  • Have successfully completed a degree in the education described in A through C in this paragraph: A) Bachelor or higher degree that includes 3 semester hours each in the following 5 course areas: 1) History of archaeology; 2) Archaeology of a major geographical area such as North America or Africa; 3) Regional archaeology, archaeological cultures, or sites in a specific part or portion of a major geographical area to acquire or develop a foundation for regional specialization for professional development; 4) Theory and methods of archaeology. Methods include, but are not limited to, typology, classification, sampling, cultural evolution, diffusion, dating and analytical techniques; 5) Archaeological field school, to provide a basic understanding of theoretical and practical approaches to research design implementation, field preservation techniques, and report preparation by participation in actual field work. B) IN ADDITION, must have taken six semester hours of related course work in: geography, geology, or cultural geography; history, historiography, or historical archaeology; environmental studies; scientific writing (nonfiction English composition); and/or surveying. C) AND must have completed archaeological field school. Field school must be documented in your transcripts or resume.
  • Or, have a degree in a related curriculum: Degree in anthropology (with emphasis on ethnology, physical anthropology, or scientific linguistics), history, American studies, or a related discipline may be accepted as satisfying in full the educational requirements, provided the curriculum supplied academic course work sufficiently similar to the requirements stated in A above, including archaeological field school. Field school must be documented in your transcripts or resume.
  • Or, a combination of education and experience (college-level education or training) that provided knowledge equivalent to that described in A above, plus appropriate technical experience or additional education.
  • Or, four years of archaeological work experience that demonstrated a thorough knowledge of the fundamental principles and theories of professional archaeology. The work experience must have included archaeology field experience, which may include that gained in an archaeological field school. Field experience should have included a combination of professional experience in archaeological survey, excavation, laboratory analysis, and preparation of written materials. Applicants with such field experience should, after additional experience under the direction of a higher-grade archaeologist, be able to demonstrate the ability to be a crew chief, directing the work of others at a single location as a part of a larger archaeological project.
  • Basic Requirements for Biologist, GS-0401:
  • Have successfully completed a degree in biological sciences, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry, or related disciplines appropriate to the position.
  • Or, have a combination of education and experience: Courses equivalent to a major, as shown above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.
  • Basic Requirements for Museum Curator, GS-1015:
  • Have successfully completed a degree in museum work; or in an applicable subject-matter field.
  • Or, have a combination of education and experience: Courses equivalent to a major, as shown above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.
  • Or, four years of experience that provided knowledge comparable to that normally acquired through the successful completion of the 4-year course of study as shown above.
  • In addition to meeting at least one of the basic requirements listed above, to qualify for this position at the GS-11 grade level, you must possess at least one of the following minimum qualifications by close of the announcement:

    EXPERIENCE: At least one full year of specialized experience comparable in scope and responsibility to the GS-09 grade level in the Federal service (obtained in either the public or private sectors). This experience includes activities such as: providing resource program support and professional advice in at least one of the occupations listed (history, archeology, biology or museum curation/studies); participating as a professional member of a research team; conducting historic research; preparing reports based on research; conducting oral history interviews; conducting archaeological surveys and excavations; analyzing archaeological materials; reviewing permits, project proposals; evaluating cultural landscapes; review of landscape construction; plan long range protection and management of cultural resources; utilizing computerized systems to process, and analyze archaeological or museum data; performing field condition assessments and evaluating projects in accordance to National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA) and Section 106 compliance. You must include hours worked per week in your resume.

    OR

    EDUCATION: Successful completion of at least three years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to a PhD or equivalent doctoral degree in an accredited educational institution concentrated in a field that is directly related to the work of this position such as history, archeology, biology or museum curation/studies. You must include transcripts.

    OR

    Successful completion of a combination of education and experience as described above. To combine education and experience, first divide your number of semester hours in excess of 36 semester hours by 18 or the number your school uses to represent one year of full time graduate academic study. To calculate your percentage of experience, divide your months of qualifying specialized experience by 12. Add the two percentages. They must equal 100% to qualify using this option. You must include hours worked per week and a copy of your transcripts.

    Education

    Volunteer Experience: Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

    To qualify based on education, you must submit a legible copy of transcripts from an with your name, school name, credit hours, course level, major(s), and grade-point average or class ranking. Transcripts do not need to be official, but if you are selected for this position and you used your education to qualify, you must provide official transcripts before you begin work.

    If you are using to meet qualification requirements, you must show that your education credentials have been evaluated by a private organization that specializes in interpretation of foreign education programs and such education has been deemed equivalent to that gained in an accredited U.S. education program; or full credit has been given for the courses at a U.S. accredited college or university.
