Duties:

The Quantum Measurement Division (QMD) provides the physical foundation for the International System of Units (Système International d'Unités or SI), colloquially referred to as the metric system

As the new Physicist on our team your duties will include:

  • Planning and executing scientific research focused on the development and use of novel optical spectroscopies to study low dimensional material systems.
  • Operation of advanced cryogenic, magnetic, electronic and optic systems interfacing with class 3 and class 4 excitation lasers.
  • Designing then establishing new measurement capabilities and then collecting and analyzing the experimental data.
  • Data analysis is critical to success including fitting the data to multiple functions/parameters.
  • Producing figures summarizing data and comparing said data to the published literature.
  • Present the results of the scientific work at meetings and conferences and then draft publications for submission and peer review.
  • Train new group members on the use of instrumentation, data collection and analysis.
  • Propose new areas for exploration and funding.

Qualifications:


Individual Occupational Requirements:

Basic Requirements**:

Degree:
physics; or related degree that included at least 24 semester hours in physics.


OR

  • Combination of education and experience - courses equivalent to a major in physics totaling at least 24 semester hours, plus appropriate experience or additional education.

In addition to the basic requirements, applicants must have at least 1 year (52 weeks) of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-9 (ZP-II at NIST) level. Specialized experience is defined as having proficiency in the use of lasers, optics and spectroscopies as demonstrated through scientific presentations and peer reviewed publications; experience in the use of cryostats for temperature control and superconducting magnets, and the fitting of large data sets with scientific software; familiarity with materials systems of two dimensional (2D) materials and perovskites; must be able to work within a multidisciplinary group.

Master's or equivalent graduate degree as defined in the basic requirements.


OR
A combination of graduate education and specialized experience as defined in the additional requirements.
