SUMMARY
Performs retail food service evaluations and inspections; inspects public swimming pools and spas, investigates food-borne illness complaints; teaches food handlers classes; performs site and soil evaluations for approval of on-site sewage facilities (OSSFs); reviews plans and inspects both new and existing OSSFs; and responds to environmental and public health complaints.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
Inspects public swimming pools and spas:
- Reviews food-service evaluations and inspections;
- Investigates food-borne illness complaints;
- Teaches food handlers classes;
- Performs site and soil evaluations for approval of OSSFs;
- Reviews plans and inspects both new and existing OSSFs as assigned to ensure compliance with state and local ordinances, rules, and regulations, and issues licenses for OSSFs as appropriate;
- Performs daycare/foster home, and substandard home inspections as required;
- Reviews and approves plans for both restaurants and OSSFs units;
- Complies with policies and procedures delineated in the current "Employee Handbook and Personnel Policies of Brazos County, Texas" and department supplements;
- Responds to environmental and public health complaints both inside and outside the city limits; and
- Performs general administrative work, including generating reports, sending corrective action notices, and completing timesheets.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
This is a non-supervisory position.
QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE
Bachelor's degree in science, or a related field, plus a minimum of 30 college/university credit hours in basic or natural sciences, or any equivalent combination of education and a minimum of 2 years experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
KNOWLEDGE OF
Laws governing swimming pools and spas, laws governing food-service facilities and inspection practices; laws governing OSSFs; personnel policies and procedures.
SKILL/ABILITY TO
Establish and maintain effective working relationships with health department employees, county employees, representative of governmental agencies, and the general public; communicate effectively, both orally and in writing; operate standard word processing and spreadsheet software; operate surveying equipment; and handle chemicals safely.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS
Valid Texas Driver's License and dependable vehicle; Registered Sanitarian in the State of Texas; and Designated Representative Certification from the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality.
