Description
Position Focus:
Responsible for the daily operation and personnel supervision of a specialized laboratory within a department. Collaborates with PI to ensure compliance with EHS, including up to date rDNA, Biological, and Animal registrations, new personnel training, safety procedures, and waste disposal. Collaborates with PI to manage lab finances and grant budgeting. Responsible for coordinating lab reagents, consumables, and equipment requests and for purchasing from appropriate sources and with appropriate funding. Responsible for creating long term plans for lab reagents, consumables, and equipment to ensure smooth operation of laboratory. Provides input to the PI into hiring decisions by interviewing candidates and evaluating funding availability. Coordinates equipment maintenance and repairs; coordinates continued supply of carbon dioxide, liquid nitrogen, and oxygen to maintain key operation in the lab. Communicates with reagents, equipment, and repair/maintenance services representatives. Coordinates sample submission to Yale core facilities and shipment of samples. Coordinates and ensures reliable data collection and storage systems for the lab. Responsible for mouse colony maintenance of over 10 genetically engineered mouse strains, including mating, genotyping, experimental cohort assembly, health monitoring, transfer, implementing specialized care, and experimental analysis. Performs experiments to support ongoing projects, including cloning, RNA, DNA and protein isolation and analysis, virus preparation and tittering, and others as needed.
Essential Duties
1. Designs, plans, implements and evaluates complex multifaceted research projects/systems, including method development, adaptation and validation. 2. Collaborates with PI to define research endeavors and the development of research hypothesis and approach. 3. Solves complex methodology, protocol, procedural and research problems through design of techniques, procedures and policies that will achieve research goals. 4. Develops long range plans for supplies and equipment to ensure smooth operation of laboratory. 5. Investigates, analyzes and evaluates complex data, data collection systems and methods to reach scientific conclusions and ensures the integrity of research data. 6. Collaborates with PI to coordinate major lab renovations working with Facilities, Health and Safety, and Purchasing to ensure deadlines, safety standards and purchases are according to plans and within budgets. 7. Prepares scientific reports and papers for research proposals and published reports. 8. May perform other duties as assigned.
Required Education and Experience
Master's Degree in a scientific discipline and three years of experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Required Skill/Ability 1:
Demonstrated experience with maintenance, genotyping, and management of mouse colony.
Required Skill/Ability 2:
Demonstrated experience with maintenance of lab reagents, consumables, and equipment.
Required Skill/Ability 3:
Strong organization and accounting skills. Excellent writing and communication skills. Proven experience with management of lab finances and grant budgeting.
Required Skill/Ability 4:
Demonstrated animal experience. Organization and accounting skills. Writing and communication skills.
Preferred Education, Experience and Skills:
Master's Degree in Business Management and two years of experience with vertebrate animal research.
