Salary - $22.13 per hour_

***: Operate solid waste equipment to collect residential trash and yard waste. Dispose of trash and yard waste at designated disposal facility. Provide Solid Waste container management duties. Operate and participate in Routeware software and hardware. Responsible for providing quality solid waste services.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
This list represents the types of duties required by the position. Other duties may be assigned as reasonably expected.

  • Solid Waste container management including but not limited pickup, deliver, repair and clean solid waste containers.
  • Drive trucks on established routes, through residential streets or alleys or through business or industrial areas.
  • Provide daily maintenance to vehicles/equipment, including cleaning behind the blade, cabs, leach boxes, trucks, greasing, maintaining fluid levels, tire pressures, lights, fuel levels and safety items.
  • Completes pre and post inspections daily (DVIR).
  • Operates equipment that compresses collected refuse and yard waste.
  • Operates automated or semiautomated hoisting devices that raise refuse bins and dump contents into openings in truck bodies.
  • Tracks the status of trash and yard waste pickup on Solid Waste softwareRouteware, document issues with customers, pickups, and containers.
  • Communicates with management concerning delays, unsafe sites, accidents, equipment breakdowns, Routeware or other maintenance issues.
  • Follow City of South Bend Policies, Procedures and City Ordinance.
  • Check road or weather conditions to determine how routes will be affected.
  • Tact and diplomacy expected daily in interacting with residents and coworkers.
  • Assist in training new drivers/employees.

QUALIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:


  • High school diploma or equivalent education required.
  • Experience in driving large heavyduty trucks.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:


  • Knowledge of proper and safe use of solid waste vehicles.
  • Ability to perform routine maintenance on equipment and determine when and what kind of maintenance is needed.
  • The ability to quickly respond (with the hand, finger, or foot) to a signal (sound, light, picture) when it appears.
  • The ability to exert maximum muscle force to lift, or push, pull, or carry objects.
  • The ability to bend, or stretch, twist, or reach with your body, arms, and/or legs.
  • The ability to work in adverse weather conditions.
  • The ability to understand written and verbal instructions.
  • The ability to perform all physical requirements of the position
  • The ability to see details at a distance.
  • The ability to concentrate on a task over a period of time without being distracted.
  • The ability to work in confine spaces.
  • Computer experience preferred.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSE, REGISTRATION:


  • Valid Class A or Class B Commercial Driver's License (CDL) required.
  • Truck Driving Certification a plus.

EQUIPMENT:

Two-way radio, Routeware software tablet, front end loader, rear loader, automatic side loader, forklift, bobcat, power/tote washer, trash, and yard waste containers.

Employee performs a physical activity that requires regularly sitting in a truck and considerable use of arms and legs and moving of the whole body, such as climbing, lifting, balancing, walking, stooping, and handling of materials.

Must load, unload, or stack containers, materials, or products, and move or fit heavy objects. Must be able to lift 75 pounds or more.


WORK ENVIRONMENT:
Employee rides in an enclosed vehicle daily and is exposed to both extreme and adverse weather conditions. Exposure to pollutants, dust, gases, odors, or distracting noises or sounds is common. There is also exposure to cuts, bites, or stings. Entire office area and City vehicles are smoke free.
