- Performs assessment on inpatients, including mothers of infants in the intensive care units. Outpatient postpartum support and consultation of breastfeeding babies can occur via telephone consultation. Documents assessment and plan of care for every consultation. Demonstrates the ability to utilize research into clinical practice.
- Assists in the establishment of lactation through education and direct patient care in the antepartum, intrapartum, and postpartum periods.
- Assesses for breastfeeding difficulties. Works with providers to establish an individual plan of action for patients, using hospital policies and protocols to ensure consistency of information.
- Provides emotional support for patients with breastfeeding difficulties. Practices active listening skills to fully assess a patient's needs. Provides reassurance, acceptance, and encouragement.
- Provides information in an unbiased manner and encourages parents to make informed choices based on their own needs and preferences. Demonstrates acceptance of patients' feelings, rights and choices as evidenced by patient feedback.
- Works collaboratively with maternity and NICU staff to develop breastfeeding policies and protocols for all breastfeeding dyads.
- Shares educational resources with maternity and NICU staff through in-services and one to one communication.
- Provides written documentation of care and treatment recommendations.
- Provides follow-up for at-risk patients after leaving hospital.
- Plans breastfeeding class material to meet participants' level of understanding. Ensures that requested topics are covered in class. Relates to clients in a supportive, affirmative, and open manner. Is sensitive and responsive to cultural differences. Displays approachability as evidenced by participants' comments on class evaluations.
- Represents UMHC as a breastfeeding resource to the community through public speaking/events.
- High school graduate.
- Certified by the International Board of Lactation Consultant Examiners (IBCLC).
- Bachelor's degree.
- One year related clinical experience.
- Demonstrated expertise in clinical area, specifically breastfeeding patients.
- Experienced in lactation care of multi-racial, bilingual, vulnerable groups of women, with an understanding of cultural, social, political, and economic barriers to successful breastfeeding.
- Ability to influence the quality of patient care in an advisory capacity to the physician and other health care team members.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills to interact with patients, staff, and referring providers.
- Strong organizational and interpersonal skills, as well as the ability to work either independently or as part of a team.
- Experience with EMR.

Provides breast-feeding support and education to mothers and babies at UMMHC as well as to the nursing and medical staff. The Patient Educator works to support and educate breastfeeding patients to meet their breastfeeding goals. The Patient Educator uses culturally and linguistically appropriate techniques to provide breastfeeding information, benefits of breastfeeding, anticipatory guidance to prevent and manage common breastfeeding concerns and to identify support services in the community.
