SUMMARY:


The WINGS & First Gen Coordinator will play a key role in preparing the new incoming class of undergraduate students as they transition into college.

This position will be responsible for faculty and staff to develop programming to prepare students for the academic year. In addition, the WINGS & First Gen Coordinator will assist students in monthly programming and student mentoring. Events will be created to support students in their academic and professional development.

The U.S. Department of Education's Developing Hispanic-Serving Institutions (HSI)

Program awarded Concordia University Irvine a $3 million grant, the largest federal grant in the university's history. Concordia's grant-winning initiative is titled "Avanzando:
Access and Success" and will enhance support services for undergraduate Hispanic students. The HSI grant will help Concordia meet the needs of its growing Hispanic population.

ROLE:

This role advises a cohort of traditional undergraduate students. Particularly this position oversees the WINGS program.

The WINGS program is a two year program dedicated to the education and support of distinguished students who have been invited to participate as a condition of their enrollment.

All activities of this position are to make a contribution to the fulfillment of the mission of the university.


APPOINTMENT:


  • Recommended by the Associate Dean of Student Engagement
  • Approved by the Associate Vice President of Student Affairs

STAFF RELATIONSHIPS:


  • Reports to the HSI Program Director and Associate Dean of Student Engagement
  • Work closely with the HSI grant positions, Registrar, Admissions, Student Success staff, Orientation team, and Clubs and Organizations
  • Consult with the Provost, Deans of the Schools, Department Chairs, faculty, and others regarding policies and programs that affect student success

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE THE FOLLOWING:

  • HSI Grant Initiatives Pertaining to the WINGS Program_
  • Implement and execute HSI grant initiatives for Concordia's WINGS Program.
  • Plan and execute the Summer Bridge program under the direction of the WINGS Program Director.
  • Recruitment and hiring of Student Success Mentors and First Gen Mentors
  • On board training for both group of student leaders
  • Develop a strategic plan to help develop the two group of student leaders throughout the semester
  • Plan and oversee all activities related to the WINGS Program throughout the academic semester
  • Plan and oversee all activities related to the first generation students population throughout the academic year
  • Knowledge of the Hispanic community and best practices to develop students academic and professionally.
  • Participate in recommended professional activities to enhance skills and abilities.
  • Participate in professional organizations' functions which may include attending workshops and conferences.
  • Supervise student workers as needed or as requested by the director.
  • Duties require day and occasional evening and weekend hours.
  • Perform other duties as assigned to insure the success of the program on behalf of the university, its students and alumni.

  • This position requires the individual to be strategic, politically savvy and a relationshipbuilding change agent.

  • Strong public speaking skills; written communication and editing skills to develop reports, memos, handouts, brochures and other promotional materials.
  • Strong organizational skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and to handle pressure in a fast paced and changing environment.
  • Able to maintain the confidentiality of all University, Departmental and student processes and records.

Education/Experience

  • 13 years of experience in Career Services either in Higher Education or a Private Business Environment
  • Experience developing relationships with private employers including outreach initiatives with with Hispanic businesses and the nonprofit sector
  • Exposure to the development of college or training programs
