- Manage academic referrals for students in grades 6–8
- Interpret diagnostic assessments and learning evaluations
- Create and share academic and learning support plans
- Provide direct instruction to students as needed or requested
- Consult with teachers and administrators to design, align, and implement innovative approaches to instruction in order to support student-centered, forward-focused, and engaging learning experiences
- Collaborate with both teachers and students to develop an informed and organized approach to differentiated instruction
- Support the documentation and sharing of student progress benchmarks
- Partner with the School Psychologist to support students, faculty, and parents
- Support the administrative team in identifying, designing, and/or implementing strong and effective professional development opportunities in the areas of learning differences
- Partner with other Middle School team members to lead professional development with a lens of learning support and to lead research and implementation efforts related to mastery-based assessment, project-based learning, literacy, and progressive pedagogy
- Develop a curated collection of resources and materials that promote Hawken's unique and evolving approach to education
- Participate in weekly grade-level team meetings and trips
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Middle School Director or Head of School QUALIFICATIONS
- Certification as a learning/enrichment specialist or equivalent degree/specialization
- Master's degree and at least three years teaching experience (preferred)
- Demonstrated competence and leadership in curriculum development, instruction, and pedagogy
- Respect for confidentiality in dealing with students who may have a diagnosis
- Exceptional understanding of the developmental needs of middle school learners
- Joyful enthusiasm for middle school learners
- Flexibility, good humor, and the motivation to work both independently and as a responsible member of grade-level and administrative teams
- Facility with dynamic educational technologies
- Demonstrated experience working in a diverse community and strong cross-cultural competency skills
- Willingness and eagerness to assist in the life of the School
- Ability to identify challenges and draw from a toolbox of varied strategies
- Familiarity with diverse ways of engaging students over a range of learning styles enhanced by a desire to try new approaches
- Demonstrated expertise in working on teams that include colleagues, parents, and outside professionals to support students

Lyndhurst: Lower and Middle School (Toddler–Grade 8)
Hawken's Lyndhurst campus houses programs for toddlers through grade eight that reflect the school's dual commitment to academic and social curricula. Beginning in Early Childhood, students are taught in developmentally appropriate ways to make choices, manage time, think critically and creatively, develop ownership for their learning, and engage others with empathy. Hawken's Lower School program focuses on building a strong foundation in basic academic skills with an increasing emphasis on personal responsibility. With a focus on hands-on learning and student choice, our Middle School program enables students to be active participants in their education. By exploring science, math, and the humanities using an interdisciplinary and experience-based approach, students dive deeply into subject areas and become immersed in the process of learning and discovery.

THE POSITION
Hawken School is seeking a credentialed learning specialist to join a collaborative team of teachers and administrators to help deepen our commitment to building a more progressive and differentiated teaching and learning culture. The successful candidate will serve as a member of the Support Services team and the senior Middle School administrative team and interact with a broad range of constituents, including students, faculty, parents, and administrators.
