Miami-Dade Corrections Health Services (CHS) operates under Jackson Health System (JHS) and serves approximately 5,000 patients daily.

Patient care is delivered by nearly 400 healthcare employees representing a diverse multidisciplinary team of nurses & nurse support staff, physicians, psychiatrists, social workers and other professionals.

CHS supports Miami Dade Corrections & Rehabilitation at 3 facilities in Miami-Dade County and leverages the resources of a large public safety net health system in the areas of education, quality, risk management & compliance.


Summary


The Director of Patience Care Services assumes responsibility for the planning, priority setting, coordination, management and evaluation of patient and staff education for the Jackson Health System(JHS).

Provides the organization with a positive example of cooperative leadership by maintaining an enthusiastic and progressive relationship with patient care services, directors and vice presidents, as appropriate.

Exercises shared responsibility for maintaining an appropriate balance of cooperation, communication, and integration among the departments, faculty and staff to ensure an efficient and progressive environment that carries out a program of quality education.

Provides the opportunity for growth and development of staff through learning opportunities, professional mentorship, research, and other staff development activities.


Responsibilities

  • Participates in developing, implementing and evaluating the departmental mission, goals and objectives; and is responsible for ensuring that the goals and objectives of the department are consistent with those of the JHS. Assumes responsibility for developing appropriate admission, discharge, transfer, and continued stay criteria in order to reduce length of stay. Participates in the development of an effective and efficient care management system for the Jackson Health System (JHS). Collaborates to enhance patient care with multidisciplinary team approaches (e.g. preadmission, intake, treatment planning, case management plans, discharge planning, etc.).
  • Assumes responsibility for defining and interpreting patient care (nursing) practice and the patient care (nursing) needs of the patients. Develops compatible policies and programs that reflect utilization of available resources and a responsiveness to the personal and professional development of the patient care (nursing) staff. Responds adaptively to situations where control is lacking. May undertake shortrange planning or making immediate selections from existing alternatives. Shares in the accountability for assuring a strong quality assessment/improvement program. Works with the Education and Quality Manager to carry out a program of quality improvement that is designed to monitor, evaluate, and improve the quality of health care services provided.
  • Participates in the hospital's strategic planning activities and interprets the role of education in the strategic plan. Participates with other members of management in developing, implementing, and evaluating institutional policies and programs related to the determination and allocation of financial, human, material, and informational resources. Recruits, retains, and motivates key personnel who will contribute significantly to the desired service orientation of the department. Ensures that services offered by the Department are of the highest quality and meet hospital and community needs. Is knowledgeable about JHS policies and able to present them to others.
  • Takes initiative in ensuring that the Department has a broadlybased program that helps the JHS meet its goals and objectives. Demonstrates the ability to adapt to situations where control is lacking and may undertake shortrange planning or making immediate selections from existing alternatives as necessary. Promotes a strong customer service orientation within the Department and takes appropriate corrective action when needed.
  • Directs the planning, organizing and conducting of employee training programs designed to orient personnel, improve work skills, develop potential for upward mobility, and improve operations of the JHS. Ensures an educational system which prepares staff to best meet the needs of patients and provides for the professional development of personnel. Represents the Department on the Clinical Nursing Practice Committee and other Service Center and hospital committees, as appropriate. Assists in the development and implementation of organizationwide and unit specific, agespecific, safety, security and infection control standards and education. Participates in the development, implementation and evaluation of the Performance Improvement Plan.
