Position in this function provides laboratory services and supervisory support by directing the work of technical staff that is performing tests in the clinical laboratory and exercises supervision of Medical Technologists / Medical Laboratory Technicians.
Primary Responsibilities:
- Assists in the performance of laboratory testing in accordance with medical group and governmental standards
- Supervises the daily activities of Medical Technologists. Oversees the accurate and appropriate completion of laboratory tests
- Reviews and signs daily quality control records and implements remedial action when needed
- Reviews problems with instrumentation and methods and documents problems and resolutions in an action log
- Reviews and signs daily, weekly and extended maintenance logs including temperature charts
- Reviews and signs calibration logs
- Evaluates workflow in the laboratory and suggests methods to improve turn around time
- Monitors reagent inventory and maintains a reagent inventory
- Performs linearity testing on analyzers
- Participates in the professional development activities and assists with delegation of continuing education events as well as proficiency testing
- Reviews, interprets and evaluates test results and reports for accuracy, precision, readability and consistency. Rejects or accepts results
- Maintains patient confidentiality
- Performs related work as required

Required Qualifications:
- BS Degree in Medical Technology or an equivalent science and Certification as a Medical Technologist (ASCP or equivalent)
- NYS professional licensure

Typical Physical Demands:
- Requires full range of body motion including manual and finger dexterity and eyehand coordination
- Frequent standing and walking required for long periods of time
- Must be able to lift and carry items weighing up to 30 lbs
- Requires visual acuity and normal color perception
Working Conditions:
Exposure to communicable diseases, toxic substances, ionizing radiation, medicinal preparations, and other conditions common to a medical group and laboratory are possible.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Knowledge of clinical laboratory policies, procedures, standards, tests and QC
- Knowledge of supervisory principles to oversee the work of technologists
- Knowledge of laboratory instruments and troubleshooting
- Knowledge of Medical terminology and the ability to interact with Medical Staff regarding laboratory procedures and results
- Knowledge of safety requirements and the ability to recognize and provide correction to hazardous conditions
- Skill in performing a full range of laboratory tests
- Skill in anticipating and reacting calmly to emergency situations
- Skill in laboratory documentation
- Skill in identifying and resolving problems
- Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with patients, medical staff and the public
- Ability to evaluate and use statistics and other data
- Ability to communicate clearly
- Ability to evaluate staff for competency
