The Role
Newport News Shipbuilding, a division of Huntington Ingalls Industries, is offering a $500 sign-on bonus to TRADE Trainee hires.

Pipe fitters are responsible for installing these complex systems together on the ship and in the shop: more than 23 miles of pipe are installed on a submarine, and more than 230 miles of pipe are installed on a carrier.

As a pipe fitter, you will learn to read blueprints, fabricate, install, inspect, and test the many piping systems onboard a ship.

In your first few weeks at the company you will attend a Fundamentals of Piping Fitting class where you will receive important information needed for you to perform you job.

During your career you will also receive other training need to enhance your knowledge of the job.


Newport News Shipbuilding has partnered with the Virginia Ship Repair Association and local Virginia community colleges and maritime training facilities to offer several course-to-hire Marine Trades Training (MTT) programs for individuals interested in learning a trade and working full-time for Newport News Shipbuilding.

Courses are offered once a month with 8-10 students per class. This is a 3-week (UNPAID) program (120 hours), 7 a.m. - 3:30 p.m. (Monday thru Friday).


Must Have
Must be able to kneel, squat, crawl, bend, stoop, and climb.

Must be able to lift 40 lbs and must take and pass a respirator fit test.

Must be able to work indoors/outdoors year round in all weather conditions.

Must be able to work assigned shift as production needs.

Must be able to pass Physical Agility Test.

High school graduate or equivalent preferred
