Job Summary
Essential Job Duties
- Performs scientific research that includes small animal procedures, such as oral gavage, IV, SC, IP injections, intracranial surgery, and imaging using fluorescence, luminescence, ultrasound, and magnetic resonance.
- May also perform scientific research that includes techniques such as tissue histology, optical microscopy, cell culture, and molecular biology.
- Is expected to be an author on scientific publications.
- Manages animal protocols. Serves as the laboratory's primary contact with our Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC), the Office of Laboratory Animal Resources (OLAR), and Institutional Biosafety Committee (IBC). Leads the development and updating of IACUC protocols in a timely manner. Prepares and maintains IACUC and related biosafety protocols.
- Trains group members on practices related to animal and related biosafety protocols.
- Tracks animal research costs and identifies opportunities to increase efficiency.
- Tracks, maintains, and orders animal research supplies.
- Maintains and purchases equipment related to animal research.
- Interprets and ensures compliance with Institute policies, scientific research protocols, and federal regulations. Serves as a resource on compliance for all research group scientists, students, and staff.
- Works with other groups at Caltech who collaborate with the Shapiro lab to facilitate their in vivo experiments.
- Works with users of the Beckman Institute Center for Deep Tissue Molecular Imaging and Control (DeepMIC) to help them establish methods for in vivo research using the center's equipment and advises them on relevant IACUC protocols. Provides handson assistance with experiments. Coordinates this activity with the director of the DeepMIC center.
- Other duties as assigned.
Basic Qualifications
- Bachelor's or Master's degree in Biology, Biomedical Engineering or related field.
- Passion for breakthrough research and desire to learn new things.
- 3 or more years' experience with small animal laboratory research in academia or industry.
- Experience interfacing with IACUC.
- Experience analyzing and interpreting experimental data.
- Excellent interpersonal and problemsolving skills.
- Excellent collaboration and communication skills.
- Ability to exercise discretion and independent decisionmaking; ability to prioritize work according to urgency; ability to multitask and work under tight deadlines.
- Ability to master new material and adapt to changes in workflow and requirements.
- Lab management experience.
