The Town of South Hadley's Council on Aging Department seeks applicants to fill a grant-funded position for a part-time Technology Instructor (5hr/wk).
The incumbent will be responsible for teaching seniors how to utilize various technologies.Summary of Responsibilities:
- Plan, develop, and implement lessons for basic computer, keyboard, and internet skills to seniors for devices including Apple and nonApple tablets, smartphones, and laptops.
- Orient and coach older adults on use of social media platforms in order to maximize their social benefit and enhance social connectivity for isolated older adults.
- Teach internet safety including personal responsibility for technology use.
- Present materials using a large screen for participants to be able to follow along, as well as producing relevant handout materials as needed.
- Support the goals, philosophy, and mission of the South Hadley Council on Aging.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with seniors, students, and colleagues.
Recommended Minimum Qualifications:
The following requirements may be substituted by and equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities required to perform the job:
- Two years' experience in providing technology training, support, or instruction to older adults; High School degree or equivalent; Associate's Degree in Computer Technology or related area of study is desirable.
- Must have access to reliable transportation to be able to travel to other intown locations as necessary.
- Fundamental understanding of computer hardware, software, basic operating systems, various mobile devises and basic functions, video calling software, messaging apps, internet, wireless and Bluetooth technology, online entertainment and streaming services.
- Awareness of online security risks and best practices for safe browsing, and the ability to educate vulnerable users on safe internet communication, social media usage and online privacy practices.
- Maintain a professional and approachable demeanor at all times and strong customer service and effectively and tactfully with the public and older adults
- Ability to break down complex technological concepts into simple, understandable terms, and to adapt teaching style to accommodate different learning paces and preferences.
- Ability to deliver engaging and informative presentations, and in adapting content and style to suit target audience needs and interests
- Capacity to work collaboratively with other departments to develop programs and topics based on community need and that integrate technology education with other services offered through town
- Commitment to fostering diversity, equity, and inclusion in all aspects of work.
Status and Compensation:
This is a grant-funded position with opportunity to renew. Continued employment is contingent upon award and availability of funding. This is a FLSA non-exempt, non-union, non-benefited position, five hours per week with days and hours negotiable. Hourly rate is up to $25 per hour DOQ
