GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

Serves as an athletic trainer substitute due to the staff member's absence.

During a prolonged absence, the substitute is responsible for performing all essential functions identified in the Athletic Trainer job description.


ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

  • Serves as an integral member of the high school athletic healthcare team.
  • Implements strategies for injury and illness prevention, promptly identifying and evaluating injuries, and supporting studentathletes in rehabilitation and reconditioning.
  • Communicates with stakeholders including school administrators, coaches, and parents.
  • Attends athletic events and practices: provides medical gear and advice, educates athletes on injuries and nutrition, conducts onfield assessments, administers immediate care, coordinates care and referrals, ensures emergency response readiness, offers rehabilitation guidance, maintains athletic training facilities.
  • Adheres to professionalism and compliance standards.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by the administration in accordance with the school division's policies and practices.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

Excellent oral communication and decision making skills. Ability to assume all the duties and responsibilities of the regular athletic trainer.


EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:


Required:
Bachelor's degree; must hold current certification as an athletic trainer in Virginia by Board of Medicine.


Preferred:
Bachelor's degree in Athletic Training or related field; two years experience as athletic trainer.

PAYGRADE:27.72 per hour

PHYSICAL CONDITIONS:


Must have the use of sensory skills in order to effectively communicate and interact with other employees, students and the public through the use of the telephone and personal contact.

Physical capability to effectively use and operate various items of office related equipment. Work is typically performed in a school setting including; classroom, gym, cafeteria, auditorium and recreational areas. Frequent walking, standing, occasional lifting up to 40 pounds may be required. Occasional travel with students on field trips may be required. Occasional movement of students by wheelchairs and other mechanical devices may be required. Daily personal and close contact with students to provide classroom management and learning environment support is required. Regular contact with other staff members and parents is required. Occasional contact with medical professionals may be required. Frequent contact with parents by phone and in person is necessary. Substitutes are required to stay for the entire workday.
