- Conducting diesel engine repairs, rebuilds, and overhauls as well as other types of engines Assist in tearing down, repairing, replacing, and installing reduction gears Analyzes job from start to finish ensuring proper and safe work methods used. Reads and interprets work specifications, blue prints, technical manuals and design sketches to ensure the proper dimensions and tolerance levels of the finished product. Assembles, repairs, and fabricates metal parts by operating mechanical equipment such as hand tools, calipers, micrometers, lathes, boring mill, planer, shaper, slotter, and milling machine. Assembles parts into sub-units or complete units. May install ship machinery such as propelling machinery, auxiliary motors, pumps, ventilating equipment, and steering gears. Tests and inspects installed machinery and equipment during dock and sea trials. Assists, guides, and demonstrates good marine practices. Identifies and troubleshoots mechanical problems and reports to supervisor.
