Preamble


Boston College High School is a Catholic, Jesuit, independent school serving approximately 1400 young men across grades 7-12 from various communities across Massachusetts.

Founded in 1863, Boston College High School continues its commitment to an authentic formation of the head, heart, and hands within the parameters of the Characteristics of Jesuit Education, the Ignatian Pedagogical Paradigm, the BC High Mission Statement, and the strategic plan.


Specific Responsibilities

School & Academic Duties

  • Counsel students in all academic areas including but not limited to study strategies, executive functioning skills, classroom strategies and more.
  • Provide counsel for students with socioemotional needs, in partnership with the Head of House.
  • Review Academic reports for students in the houses and reach out to parents regarding interventions; inform Head(s) of House about names and refer students to ARC and/or Saturday Sessions as needed.
  • Act as the point person for the student course selection process.
  • Add details regarding Students of Concern for weekly meetings; liaise with adjustment counselors as necessary.
  • Be the first point of contact for students regarding mental and/or social health struggles, working in conjunction with the Head of House and adjustment counselors whenever necessary.
  • Assist students with study strategies and organization skills.
  • Refer and coordinate students to other services outside of school including mental health professionals, learning specialists etc.

College Counseling Duties

  • Teach Post-Secondary Seminar classes for students in the 11th and 12th grade.
  • Participate as an active member of the department in planning and presenting evening and daytime events to students and their families related to academics and the college process.
  • Actively participate in professional development through NACAC, NEACAC, and similar organizations while visiting college campuses to create strong relationships with college representatives.
  • Meet with college admission counselors visiting the school and at the school sponsored college fair.

House System Duties

  • Meet with the partner heads of house on a weekly basis, at an agreedupon day and time.
  • On Advisory Group days, meet with one advisory per meeting time and rotate through all groups on an ongoing basis.
  • Attend registration daily on a rotating basis and conduct registration for Head of House as needed.
  • Arrange and run small group meetings with students on a consistent basis, ensuring that every student on the caseload has facetime with the counselor.
  • Attend and support house meetings, working as a team with Heads of House.
  • Provide support to the Office of Student Life regarding any community wide issues or initiatives.

Community Wide Duties

  • Participates in the daily life and Jesuit mission of the school community.
  • Communicate effectively with parents, teachers, administration, and community members at large.
  • Represent the school in a mission centric, positive, and professional manner.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Requirements:


  • Minimum 35 years in school and/or college counseling, college admissions experience is a plus.
  • Master's in Education, School Counseling, Educational Leadership.
  • A broad understanding of current trends and issues in college admissions.
  • Strong written experience and public speaking skills.
  • Strong organizational, communication and interpersonal skills, as well as creativity, good humor, and willingness to counsel a diverse group of students through a crucial time in their lives.
