    What does a Backend Software Engineer role involve at Handshake?

    Handshake is assembling a diverse team of dynamic engineers dedicated to creating a top-notch, impactful product. We are seeking a Backend Engineer with a proven track record of delivering high-quality and user-friendly experiences. In this role, you will collaborate with skilled engineers and designers to enhance tools and libraries utilized by development teams and our users. Join a small team of cross-functional professionals including engineers, designers, and product managers.

    Exciting projects awaiting you at Handshake:

    • Offer guidance and support to engineers in developing and launching innovative software.
    • Explore, prototype, and implement solutions to facilitate the adoption of new technologies.
    • Develop tools to streamline backend development workflow for engineers.
    • Create libraries and make contributions that impact both engineers and customers.
    • Collaborate with Designers to establish a Component Library serving various teams.

    Your responsibilities:

    • Engage in daily collaboration within a cross-functional team consisting of designers, product managers, and engineers. Interact frequently with teams across the organization including support, marketing, and more.
    • Architect and implement features essential for education partners to engage with job seekers effectively.
    • Set a high standard of quality in your work and review processes, offering constructive feedback to peers during code reviews and architectural discussions.
    • Leverage your technical expertise to influence the team's roadmap and prioritize innovative initiatives.
    • Provide mentorship to engineers, removing barriers and aiding the team in meeting project deadlines.

    Qualifications:

    • Minimum of 4 years experience as a software engineer.
    • Full stack engineering background with a focus on Backend, capable of making architectural decisions for both frontend and backend systems.
    • Proven success in collaborating with product and design partners to deliver exceptional products.
    • Experience leading significant projects from inception to successful delivery.
    • Display empathy when working with colleagues, offering mentorship and guidance to support the team's growth.
    • Proactive in seeking feedback for personal and team development, identifying areas for enhancement.
    • Effective communicator able to convey technical concepts to audiences with varying levels of technical expertise.

    Bonus areas of expertise:

    • Experience with PostgresDB, Firestore, or MongoDB databases.
    • Proficiency in React, Ruby, Ruby on Rails, Go, or Java programming languages.
    • Familiarity with creating and working with GraphQL and RESTful APIs.
    • Hands-on experience in building and maintaining microservices.
    • Worked on enterprise-level features at scale.
    • Participated in on-call rotations or incident responses.
    • Exhibit an ownership mentality, taking accountability for your work.

    Compensation:

    $140,000 - $180,000

    Our compensation structure is standardized for all U.S.-based roles, factoring in function, level, and location, benchmarked against similar companies at the same growth stage. Final offers are influenced by factors like geographic location, candidate experience, and expertise, and may differ from the listed amounts.
