Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit

The Department of Health Behavior is one of seven departments in the Gillings School of Global Public Health at the University of North Carolina.

Founded in 1943, the Department develops, and disseminates knowledge and interventions that promotes the health of individuals and communities.

The Department's 25 faculty members have backgrounds in behavioral science, health education, international health, social and cognitive psychology, medicine, medical sociology, and communications, and are united by their commitment to the disciplines of public health together with the social and behavioral sciences.

Position Summary

The Gillings School of Global Public Health seeks a full-time EHRA non-faculty Senior Research Scientist with applied statistical expertise and project management experience to support several projects.

The research scientist will support the NIAAA-funded R01s of Drs. Vivian Go and William Miller. This portfolio of work focuses on alcohol use, HIV treatment, and HIV prevention in Vietnam.

The scope of work includes project management, including protocol and SOP development, coordination of local and international ethical approvals, and data analysis.

The research scientist will also support other behavioral research projects at UNC to ensure achievement of full salary coverage within the first year.

On these projects, the scientist will assist in study design and implementation, developing survey instruments, managing large datasets, conducting advanced statistical data analyses, and assisting the study team with grant proposals, reports, and publications.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

Relevant post-Baccalaureate degree required (or foreign degree equivalent); for candidates demonstrating comparable independent research productivity, will accept a relevant Bachelor's degree (or foreign degree equivalent) and 3 or more years of relevant experience in substitution.

May require terminal degree and licensure.

Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience

Experience in statistical analysis support for behavioral science studies, including study registration on clinical ; design of surveys; data-set cleaning and preparation; analysis of data from observational studies, implementation science studies, and randomized trials.

Familiarity with the major statistical software and major database programming platforms is required.

Strong interpersonal and communication skills and ability to translate abstract statistical concepts into plain language that non-statisticians can understand is required.

Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience

Preferred candidates will have at least 5 years of experience in statistical analysis support, including study registration on ; design of surveys; dataset cleaning and preparation; analysis of data from observational studies, implementation science studies, and randomized clinical trials.

Experience with international clinical research is preferred, particularly in Vietnam and Malawi.
