    Department Summary

    The Office of Student Conflict Resolution (OSCR) promotes a safe and scholarly community in which students navigate conflict in a peaceful, socially just, and self-reflective manner. OSCR offers a spectrum of conflict resolution pathways that are educationally focused, student-driven, community-owned, and restorative in nature, which are adaptable to meet the needs of students experiencing conflict.

    Job Summary

    This position is a key part of OSCR's work to Build Trust, Promote Justice, and Teach Peace on campus. A successful candidate will embody the philosophies and principles of restorative justice, social justice, and conflict transformation. A successful candidate will also have expertise in working with diverse populations underrepresented and underserved populations with strong cultural competence.

    As a fundamental part of the OSCR team, this position is responsible for competent facilitation of all of OSCR's resolution pathways, with particular emphasis on the expert facilitation of adaptable conflict resolution pathways using restorative practices, such as conflict coaching, facilitated dialogue, restorative circle processes, and shuttle negotiation.

    Responsibilities include education and outreach, case management, program management, conflict resolution, interdepartmental and intradepartmental coordination, and supervision of student, intern/practicum, and/or community/volunteer facilitators. Through all these core components of the role, the focus will be on building sustainable bridges and connections and transforming culture and community.
    Responsibilities*

    Programmatic Leadership (50%)

    • Manages the Adaptable Conflict Resolution portfolio which includes reviewing triaging requests for services, delegating and conducting intake meetings, case management, and coordinates and facilitates the resolution of student conflicts using a spectrum of adaptable and formal conflict resolution pathways (including those referenced in the Statement of Student Rights and Responsibilities)
    • Uses Advocate database to supervise, monitor, coordinate, and audit to ensure accurate student conduct and conflict resolution case records
    • Compares, evaluates, and prioritizes possible courses of action for current cases, makes decisions on case management, and designs and implements adapted resolution processes while effectively balancing the interests of all parties in addition to broader community needs.
    • Designs and implements educational, transformational, and relational trust-building efforts focused on peacebuilding and conflict transformation within the community. Facilitates appropriate educational and restorative interventions consistent with Student Life and OSCR educational priorities and learning outcomes.
    • Facilitates and coordinates restorative justice programming through the lenses of social justice and inclusive excellence utilizing the Spectrum Model of Conflict Resolution Pathways (i.e. Conflict Coaching, Restorative Justice Circles, Facilitated Dialogue, Shuttle Negotiation).
    • Directly Supervises student staff, intern/practicum, and/or graduate student practicum students or volunteers in the Adaptable Conflict Resolution program
    • Works with highly sensitive, protected information with discretion and good judgment to maintain confidentiality of student educational records and attend to institutional risk-management concerns.
    • Identify ways in which the OSCR website and media communication platforms may be used to achieve the unit mission.

    Outreach, Education, Communication, Training & Partnerships (25%)

    • Develops and facilitates educational experiences for students related to diversity, equity, and inclusion; restorative justice; conflict transformation; and/or other OSCR-related topics.
    • Assists in the development, establishment, implementation, training, and coordination of the Adaptable Conflict Resolution Partners Program
    • Educates students to increase their ability to reflect on personal and ethical values, judgment, and decision-making.
    • Provides insight and support for creative unit-driven community-wide communication strategies to create a more complete truth narrative with regard to culture, society, racism, and oppression.
    • Participates and contributes to unit meetings and continued training efforts for professional and student staff.
    • Recommends, coordinates, develops, and implements educational, procedural, and instructional materials for the training of students and/or other campus stakeholders.
    • Utilizes best practices that draw from theory and research on restorative justice, student development, cultural competence, social justice education, conflict transformation, and trauma healing.

    Engagement with Stakeholders and Key Partners (15%)

    • Works strategically with key divisional and institutional partners, such as the Dean of Students, Michigan Housing, Office of the General Counsel, The Sexual Assault Prevention and Awareness Center, Multi-ethnic student affairs, Trotter Multi-cultural center, the Spectrum Center, the international center, the Ginsberg Center, The Department of Public Safety and Security, the Office of Institutional Equity, and various academic and organizational units, to further the peacebuilding mission of OSCR through increasingly collaborative partnerships.
    • Coordinates with the Center for Campus Involvement (CCI) and Fraternity and Sorority Life (FSL) to support registered student organizations in conflict educational needs as well as through conflict resolution resources.
    • Provides appropriate referrals for students to all appropriate community resources.
    • Provides outreach-related programs and activities for the University of Michigan. Advises members of the University community on OSCR processes, conflict resolution skill-building, and conflict management.
    • Interacts regularly with faculty, staff, students, family, caregivers, and support persons providing support to students within conflict resolution processes.
    • Consults with community stakeholders regarding student conflict issues at macro and micro levels.

    Leadership within Unit & Unit Representation (10%)

    • Provides leadership and support for OSCR-coordinated or facilitated processes within the community.
    • Ensures compliance with and education on laws related to the work of OSCR, including FERPA, Clery, and Title IX.
    • Engages regionally and nationally in opportunities that showcase OSCR's work and the Program Manager's unique expertise in the field of conflict resolution.
    • May serve as designee on behalf of OSCR leadership on the Campus Climate Ad Hoc task team.
    • Represents OSCR on campus committees, task forces, and search committees, as assigned by OSCR leadership.
    • Other duties as assigned by OSCR Director or their designee.
      Required Qualifications*
      • Bachelor's Degree or equivalent years of experience
      • Experience with individual and group facilitation processes
      • Experience working with diverse communities
      • Minimum 1 year of professional or graduate-level experience directly related to the basic functions of position
      Desired Qualifications*
      • Advanced degree in higher education, student affairs, social work, conflict resolution, peacebuilding, restorative justice, social justice education, or multicultural affairs
      • Experience in applicable areas of responsibility such as student development, ethical development, social identity development, leadership development, community building, social justice, restorative justice, conflict resolution theory, motivational interviewing, and related theories of human motivation, multipartilaity, change, and development
      • Prior experience utilizing case management databases or software
      • Broad-based knowledge of and experience working with diverse populations with an emphasis on multicultural, LGBTQ, underrepresented and underserved populations with strong cultural competence
      • Experience creating and leading student experiential learning programs for/with college students
      • Ability to develop and implement effective assessment and reporting strategies
      Additional Information
      Working conditions
      • Requires some evening or weekend hours. Position requires working with students through stressful, tense and/or emotionally challenging situations and circumstances, and addressing issues of power, privilege, and oppression. This position is designated by the University of Michigan as an Individual with Reporting Obligations (IRO) under Title IX.
      Physical requirements
      • Operations in a virtual environment, in-person environment, and a hybrid environment may be necessary, based on University operations and public health informed practices.
      Direct reports
      • The Program Manager supervises paraprofessional (graduate and undergraduate student) staff facilitators, intern/practicum students, and/or volunteers.
      Selected candidates whose start date is after 4/1/2024 or before 8/31/2024 will not be eligible for the university FY 24-25 salary/merit plan unless otherwise notified. This role may have reporting obligations under Title IX and Clery.
