Minimum Qualifications:


  • A Bachelor's Degree in Education or related field.

Licensing/Registration/Certification Requirements:

  • Maine ELA Teaching Certification (100) as issued by the Department of Education.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Develop curricula and educational plans
  • Instruct classes
  • Test students
  • Evaluate student progress to help prepare them for educational or career pathways upon release.
  • Evaluate student academic and social growth.
  • Keep appropriate records and prepare progress reports.
  • Maintain student discipline through adherence to accepted policies and regulations.
  • Assist students in the development of desirable work habits, attitudes, and skills.
  • Prepare lesson plans in accordance with curriculum.
  • Meet with and instruct assigned classes in the locations and at the times designated.
  • Plan a program of study that meets the individual needs, interests, and abilities of students.
  • Create a classroom/career area environment that is conducive to learning and appropriate to the maturity and interest of the students.
  • Guide the learning process toward the achievement of curriculum goals.

Desirable Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Knowledge of:


  • Department functions, objectives, policies, and programs.
  • Curriculum development, classroom instruction, and educational planning.
  • Modern Juvenile security principles and practices.

Ability to:


  • Teach Language Arts at the middle school or secondary school level along with general education courses.
  • Assess student needs and develop/modify instruction as necessary.
  • Work effectively as an individual and as part of a team.
  • Work with and manage atrisk youth.
  • Provide necessary accommodations and modifications for growth and success of all students.***
