    Job Summary:

    The Senior Structural Engineer will serve to lead engineering design projects. This leader will collaborate with a broader team of engineering professionals to provide design solutions to build success for our clients and employees, nationally and internationally. Typical design projects include consulting design services in the following facilities:
  • Manufacturing
  • Industrial
  • Food processing
  • Laboratories
  • Warehouses
    • Job Requirements:
  • Experience working with clients and developing proposals for obtaining new work.
  • Meticulous attention to detail.
  • Ability to prioritize and complete work in a timely manner in a deadline-driven environment without active supervision. Ability to ask for help when needed. Ability to ensure healthy work-life harmony that is necessary in prioritizing work and supporting team dynamics.
  • Ability to concurrently manage a variety of job-specific projects at varying phases of design, mentor junior structural engineers, and complete quality design checks within department.
  • Critical thinking with innovative problem-solving skills.
  • Exceptional organizational and time management skills.
  • Effective oral, analytical, writing, and presentation skills to communicate design recommendations to clients, project teams, construction contractors, and senior leadership.
  • Ability to effectively delegate or be delegated to while working as part of a collaborative team.
    • Job Duties Include:
  • Staying well-informed on new design and analysis technologies, building materials, and code changes through continuing education activities in order to effectively apply them to design.
  • Planning, leading, facilitating, and coordinating the work activity of others, including Salas O'Brien employees, customers, suppliers, and alliances at the project, office, or client level, from project proposal to completion.
  • Providing high-level technical services to clients for their projects to meet technical support requirements.
  • Providing technical and administrative direction, policy support, and assistance to junior engineers and staff.
  • Making engineering design decisions at a technical and quality level to achieve Salas O'Brien's corporate earnings objectives and to meet or exceed customer satisfaction expectations.
  • Identifying, formulating, and initiating solutions to complex problems.
  • Coordinating work tasks in accordance with Salas O'Brien's Quality Assurance Program.
  • Identifying and resolving routine problems that have conflicting or incomplete information.
  • Developing, reviewing, recommending, and implementing plans that involve scheduling, budgeting, resource allocation, and project controls.
  • Recognizing the need for and then initiating corrective action to address shortcomings in design or engineering processes that run counter to the customer's or Salas O'Brien's quality or safety requirements. Conducting root-cause assessments and recommending practical solutions to underlying problems.
  • Performing, supervising, and reviewing complex calculations, design outputs, and analyses.
  • Conducting, or directing others in, on-site structure and facility assessments for customers.
  • Providing training and mentoring for subordinate technical staff and taking an active role in personnel development.
  • Actively participating in the Employee Assessment and Development Process of Salas O'Brien employees at all levels.
  • Establishing credibility and competence with clients on technical issues and possessing well-developed personal and presentation skills.
  • Performing, supervising, and reviewing technical assessments, reports, and detailed design decisions involving uncertainty and risk.
  • Performing other responsibilities as either assigned or deemed appropriate for the position by management.
    • Education, Experience, and Skills:
  • A minimum of a BS in Civil Engineering, with an emphasis on Structures, is required. A Master of Science or Master of Engineering in Civil is preferred.
  • A Professional Engineering license is required. Structural Engineering license is preferred.
  • 10+ years of experience in structural design and project management is required. A minimum of five (5) years of experience in consulting/design of industrial, manufacturing, food processing, and power generation facilities is required.
  • Practical expertise in Structural Analysis and Design Software, specifically RISA-3D, Revit, and Enercalc.
  • Experience in executing strategic initiatives and tactical daily responsibilities.
    • Consulting-Related Services:
  • Shallow and deep foundation design.
  • Concrete pit and trench design.
  • Slab-on-grade and elevated-slab design.
  • Connection design.
  • Mechanical piping and electrical conduit support design.
  • Platform and mezzanine design.
  • Existing structure assessment – steel, concrete, and masonry.
  • Tank and bin equipment lifting lug and stiffener design.
    • Client Site Physical Requirements:
  • Ability to use multi-level stair towers, ramps, and fixed rung ladders unassisted.
  • Ability to carry and transport field measurement equipment weighing up to 15 lbs.
  • Ability to take handwritten notes and sketches in all climate conditions.
  • Ability to walk up to one (1) mile in all climate conditions.
  • Ability to work on elevated surfaces/equipment requiring the use of fall arrest devices. Instances of elevated surfaces in excess of 150 feet may occur.
  • Ability to hear safety alarms and signals while wearing required hearing protection.
  • Ability to work while wearing a respirator or self-contained breathing apparatus.
    • Location : Columbus, Ohio. Hybrid work available, with required 1-2 days in the office weekly. Travel : Up to 15%, nationally and internationally. Pay Structure : Hourly overtime compensation, where applicable.
