    The Department of City & Metropolitan Planning (CMP) within the University of Utah's College of Architecture + Planning invites applications for a two-year Postdoctoral research and teaching position.

    This position will begin on July 1, 2024, and run through June 30, 2026. The position is a 9-month appointment at 1.0 FTE.


    The successful candidate will participate in multiple grant-funded projects on disaster planning and management under the direct supervision of Dr.

    Divya Chandrasekhar. Experience in disaster studies and a strong quantitative analysis background are required.

    The successful candidate will also teach two courses per year in the Master's and undergraduate programs of the Department of City & Metropolitan Planning.

    Candidates with experience or interest in teaching planning analysis methods and GIS are preferred.


    Opportunities will be available for the successful candidate to pursue their research, collaborate on grant writing, publishing, mentor student researchers, and engage with a renowned interdisciplinary hazards research community through the NSF-funded WIRED Global Center (an interdisciplinary U.S.-Canada research center on energy and climate resilience), and the C-CIES (an interdisciplinary research center focused on improving earthquake awareness and resilience).

    The successful candidate will also have the opportunity to engage with multiple local, state, and national agencies in the field of disaster planning through existing and upcoming collaborative research grants.

    The Department's BA/BS undergraduate degree in Urban Ecology focuses on exploring the interrelationships among social, environmental, and economic systems, aiming to enhance the vitality and sustainability of places and communities.

    The Urban Ecology degree is also taught at the Utah Asia Campus in Songdo, South Korea.

    The Master of City and Metropolitan Planning (MCMP) is an accredited professional degree emphasizing ecological resiliency, smart growth, and social justice through effective communication, collaboration, and innovation.

    The Ph.
    D. in Metropolitan Planning, Policy, and Design is a research-focused program.

    Responsibilities


    Job Responsibilities:

    • Conduct research in collaboration with Dr. Divya Chandrasekhar.
    • Engage in quantitative analysis of existing datasets on disaster planning and recovery collected as part of grant-funded, collaborative projects on disaster relocation and nonprofit recovery capacity and small business mitigation and recovery;
    • Assist in writing and publishing of research results;
    • Provide grant-writing support for interdisciplinary proposals to national-level funding organizations;
    • Teach two courses per academic year in the Master's and undergraduate programs of the Department of City & Metropolitan Planning, preferably within the topics of planning analysis methods and GIS.
    • Participate in faculty governance at the department, college, and university levels.
