About the Company:

Education Through Music is a non-profit organization collaborating with New York City Public Schools to reintegrate music teachers and programs into the school curriculum. What sets us apart from other arts non-profits is that we serve as a pathway for uncertified teachers to join public schools, develop their programs, and eventually be hired by a DOE-affiliated public school. Covering all five boroughs, we have partnerships with 50 public schools and offer music education to over 18,000 children. Music plays a crucial role in a holistic education, contributing to students' social and emotional well-being and fostering equity and success. We are seeking enthusiastic teachers dedicated to music and community impact.

Responsibilities:

Lead and teach an assigned class under the guidance of the Music Teacher-Mentor
Assist in school-wide concerts (Winter or Spring) where all students perform two music pieces, taking charge of rehearsing and conducting one song. Additional responsibilities include managing logistics such as sound, lighting, and staging
Support in maintaining a conducive learning environment by managing student behavior effectively
Track and assess student progress based on ETM benchmarks using custom rubrics
Collaborate with the music teacher to create visually appealing classroom displays and ensure the space is organized and welcoming
Reinforce classroom procedures and routines to facilitate student success
Participate in professional development sessions and actively seek growth opportunities as a music teacher
Embrace cultural responsiveness in teaching and communication
Maintain open and constructive communication with ETM and school staff
Develop and uphold a portfolio including a weekly observation journal and unit plan
If involved in Ensembles: Support Mentor Teacher in managing records, instrument inventory, leading lessons, and rehearsals

Individuals not currently eligible for classroom teaching status from the NYC DOE will undergo a background check through the NYC DOE PETS system. Only those approved by the DOE with 'eligible' status are eligible for employment at ETM.

Compensation & Benefits:

$20 per hour

Accrual of sick leave

Employee-funded benefits include: Commuter benefits (transit/parking), Guardian term life, Aflac, LegalShield, 403(b) retirement plan

Requirements:

Candidates must commit to working a minimum of 10 hours and maximum of 13 hours per week for 12-14 weeks
Interns will not be compensated for non-working days during school breaks
Schedule consistency throughout the semester, with a minimum of 2.5 hours on-site per visit
Ability to align with the school's music schedule

Basic Qualifications:

Bachelor's Degree in Music/Arts or related field
1 year of teaching or student teaching experience
Proficiency in modeling quality singing for children
Strong musical knowledge
Familiarity with musical pedagogy
Advanced understanding of musical notation and theory

Preferred Qualifications:

Master's in Music Education or related field
2 years of classroom teaching children
Advanced skills in vocal or instrumental performance, especially in guitar, piano, or voice
Experience in conducting

*** Must be able to climb stairs and lift up to 15 lbs of equipment
