    BACKGROUND: International Rescue Committee(IRC) responds to the world's worst humanitarian crises and helps people to survive and rebuild their lives. At work in more than 40 countries and over 20 U.S. cities, the IRC provides resettlement, education, and empowerment support to refugees and displaced people.

    Since 1999, the IRC has developed partnerships with New York City public schools, community-based organizations and local colleges and universities to support the positive development of refugee youth and their communities in New York City. One of the programs provided to the youth is the Newcomer Youth Summer Academy (NYSA).

    The Newcomer Youth Summer Academy (NYSA) is a six-week program that prepares newly arrived refugee youth to succeed at their grade level in the New York City public school system. Up to 130 students, from ages 5 - 21, from over 20 countries will participate in academic, creative arts, social-emotional learning, physical education, and life skills classes. Adult ESL classes will be provided to parents of students enrolled in the NYSA program. Adult ESL classes will take place Monday-Thursday, and we expect at least 20 participant parents.

    SCOPE OF WORK: We are looking for 2 Adult ESL Teacher Interns to help the parents of students enrolled in the Newcomer Youth Summer Academy (NYSA) learn or improve their English skills. The classes will support refugee and migrant parents with English skills to ease their transition into everyday life in the US. Using engaging and student-centered lessons, the intern will lesson plan, lead activities, lead conversation practice and listening activities. Finally, the interns will collaborate with the Adult Education and Youth Education team members to ensure parents and their children's immediate educational needs are met.Bilingual interns (Russian/English, Ukrainian/English) are preferred. This is a perfect role for college students interested in ESL education.

    Position Term:

    Pre-program Planning:Between June 24 and July 1 - Up to 15 hours of lesson and instructional planning.

    Training: July 1-3, 2024: Up to 24 hours of training

    • Foundational online training modules to be completed independently ahead of synchronous staff training dates.

    Main Program:July 8- August 16, 2024: 2 hours of teaching (9:00 am- 11:00 am) per day (Monday- Thursday), a total of 8 hours a week, plus 1 hour weekly for 1:1 meeting with supervisor, and 6 hours weekly additional lesson planning or lesson revision if needed.

    RESPONSIBILITIES:

    • Lesson Plan for an ESL mixed English level class using interactive, learner-centered activities.
    • Lesson plan on useful phrases, terminology for parent-teacher conferences, setting a doctor's appointment, looking for a job, and other topics related to navigating NYC life.
    • Lead lessons and activities conducive for adult students to practice their reading, writing, listening, and speaking skills.
    • Conduct outreach to students to ensure attendance.
    • 1:1 Meetings with supervisor.
    • Record daily attendance for the class.
    • Complete the All-Staff program evaluation.
    • Comply with all IRC policies and protocols.

    LEARNING OBJECTIVES:

    • Interns will learn how to manage a classroom effectively with students of various backgrounds and English language levels.
    • Interns will learn to work as a team to effectively prepare and execute lessons and activities.
    • Interns will learn best practices to support parents with limited English Skills and parents of ESL youth students.
    Minimum Qualifications:

    Please note that this is an UNPAID internship.

    REQUIREMENTS:

    • Experience teaching ESL to adults, and a bachelor's degree preferred.
    • Experience working with adult students from a variety of backgrounds, including those with limited formal education and/or literacy skills.
    • Experience working with refugee and/or immigrant populations is preferred
    • Excellent classroom management skills and confidence in facilitating both large and small groups.
    • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced, ever-changing environment.
    • Ability to work well with people of diverse cultural backgrounds.
    • Reliable, responsible, and dedicated to the position until the end of the Newcomer Youth Summer Academy.
    • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
    • Strong team player who is self-directed and organized.
    • Fluency in written and spoken English required. Second language proficiency in relevant language highly desirable(Arabic, Dari, Farsi, French, Fulani, Haitian Creole, Russian, Spanish, Ukrainian.)

    Working Environment:

    • NYSA takes place in a centrally located school (TBD) in New York City.All applicants must be willing to relocate to the New York City area for the entirety of the Academy.
