**What you'll do: - Collaborate in the formulation of liar materials and other plastic closure and compound materials using an extruder or other necessary equipment to provide customers and manufacturing plants with new and improved closures and materials

  • Prepare closure materials for test and evaluation to provide customers and manufacturing plants with new and improved closures, including preparing closures for package evaluation, preparing packages for evaluation, preparing materials for physical tests, and preparing materials for shipment
  • Test material and closure properties to provide customers and manufacturing plants with new and improved closures and materials.

Tests include, but not limited to:

Oxygen ingress tests, Global Migration Studies, Thermal Mechanical Analysis (TMA), Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC), Gas Chromatography (GC), Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR), Melt Flow and Rheology Evaluation, Headspace oxygen analysis, ASTM physical properties testing, Package Performance tests and closure dimensions, microscopic evaluation and documentation, and Taste and odor evaluation.


  • Analyze and interpret data to formulate conclusions with recommended next steps
  • Track the progress of samples through various laboratories, and work groups or plants to ensure on time completion of projects
  • Maintain equipment and laboratory to ensure efficient compounding and testing of closure materials
  • Order lab supplies for efficient compounding and testing of closure materials
  • Maintain chemical inventory and MSDS file to guarantee the health and safety of the laboratory and maintain regulatory compliance

**What you'll need to have: - Bachelors degree or minimum 3 years of related experience

  • Must be self motivated and able to work independently without constant supervision
  • Good algebra skills. Must me able to use Microsoft Excel, Work and programs needed for the operation of instruments and equipment
  • Must be familiar with chemical handling practices, good mechanical ability and problem solving ability
  • Ability to write macros
  • Travel, as necessary to Silgan manufacturing facilities, vendors and customer locations in support of trials and approvals for both new and existing materials
