The primary function of the Emergency Department Technician "ED Tech" is to assist in the care of all Emergency Department patients and patient care duties under the direction of the registered nurse.

The ED technician has key duties and responsibilities as listed below.

  • Provides basic life support to patients of all ages in the emergency department setting, respecting their agespecific/developmental needs, gender, culture, religion, psychosocial and socioeconomic backgrounds.
  • Provides prompt and courteous attention to the needs of patient's, families, and visitors.
  • Assists in activities of daily living with patients including dressing/undressing, eating, toileting and ambulation.
  • Ensures patient and staff safety when assisting with care of all patients, utilizing skills to deescalate situations, asking for additional resources when patients and or families become angry/agitated and or aggressive.
  • Providing constant observation and/or one to one observation of patients under the direction of the clinical staff.
  • Maintains an awareness of the department and responds promptly to patient call alarms and monitor alarms.
  • Performs CPR and ventilation assistance under the direction of the RN and ED provider.
  • Assists with setting up oxygen delivery systems including but not limited to Hi flow O2, ventilator, and aerogen.
  • Performs: EKGs, PointofCare testing.
  • Obtains urine and blood specimens including blood cultures.
  • Performs stocking and organizing according to department procedures
  • Maintains knowledge of and operates equipment used in patient care safely.
  • Maintains a safe, clean, comfortable, and therapeutic environment for patients.
  • Covers clinical secretary duties during meal breaks or during absence of coverage.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • High School diploma or equivalent
  • Basic Life Support (BLS)
  • CNA with acute care setting experience, or third year BSN student will be considered

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Current and active EMT certification
