Founded in 1980, Neighborhood Self Help by Older Persons Project (SHOPP) is a non-profit social service agency located in the Bronx serving older adults and families caring for an ill, frail, or disabled loved one.

SHOPP's mission is based on the philosophy of self-help.

We believe that older adults are capable of helping themselves and helping others improve their capacity to deal with the physical, emotional, social, and financial challenges they face as they age.

SHOPP has several service programs that includes Community Care Network Program (CCNP); VIP Elder Justice; NY Connects of the Bronx; Case Management & Friendly Visiting Program; Caregivers Program, Lafayette Estates NORC Program;

Older Adult Centers:
Casa Boricua, Leon, Soundview, and Guess.


The purpose of the Neighborhood SHOPP Violence Intervention Program focuses on alleviating the effects of domestic violence and crime on older Bronx residents and helping to prevent victimization of the elderly.

We believe that older adults should be in a safe environment and that they should be able to recognize and deal appropriately with threatening situations in a manner that minimizes risk to themselves.

VIP social workers provide specialized services for older victims of domestic violence through information and referral, case assistance, individual and family counseling, crisis intervention, elder abuse prevention workshops, and educational presentations.

Coordination and collaboration with other agencies such as Adult Protective Services, the Bronx District Attorney's Office, and the NYC Department for the Aging Elderly Victims Resource Center to ensure that victims are provided with timely and effective intervention.

The program offers a Hybrid Schedule.

The
VIP Social Worker is specifically responsible for the following:

  • Conduct in-home assessments and develop safety plans.
  • Provide case assistance to victims of elder abuse, including information and referral, benefit and entitlement assistance, supportive contact, advocacy, counseling, escort to housing/family court/NYPD Precincts, and crisis intervention as indicated through the process of outreach, screening, assessment, intervention, and followup;
  • Conduct Elder Abuse Community Prevention activities, including presentations to general the general public, groups of older adults, and other target audiences;
  • Identify and maintain collaborative relationships in the victim's assistance network; provide information and referral to other appropriate agencies as needed and identify community resources for consultation and referral;
  • Attend periodic training and skill development workshops; participate in biweekly case consultations and supervision conferences;
  • Maintain client case records, worker logs, performance target outcome tracking, statistical reports, and other administrative requirements;
  • Participate in SHOPP staff training programs, staff meetings, Advisory Committee Meetings, and other meetings as assigned;
  • Involvement in a supervisory relationship with the PD and accepting peertopeer supervision;
  • Participate in monthly Enhanced Multi-Disciplinary Team (EMDT) meetings as well the quarterly Elder Task Force Meetings;
  • Perform other tasks as assigned by the Program Director.

Minimum Qualifications:

The VIP Social Worker will report directly to the Program Director.

This position requires a Bachelor's or Master's Degree in Social Work or a related field and experience in a social service setting.

Bi-lingual English and Spanish preferred.
