The Center for Community, Service, and Justice at Loyola University Maryland partners with community groups, public and nonprofit organizations, schools, and initiatives in Baltimore City and beyond that provide learning, service, and scholarship opportunities for Loyola community members and create positive impact for a more just and equitable world.
As part of the work of the Center for Community, Service, and Justice the Strong York Road Schools AmeriCorps VISTA project will oversee a research-based literacy tutoring program at Govans Elementary School and develop a culture of parental involvement and community engagement at Walter P.
Carter Elementary/Middle School.The AmeriCorps VISTA will recruit and train students from Loyola University Maryland to serve as volunteer tutors in an after-school literacy tutoring program and provide on-site support for the tutoring program throughout the school year.
The Strong York Road Schools AmeriCorps VISTA member will also spend time each week at Walter P.Carter Elementary/Middle School, working closely with school the Community School Director to create a culture of parental involvement and community engagement within the school.
Member Duties:
Provide on-site support and direction to volunteers in the after-school tutoring program. Develop materials for tutor recruitment, onboarding, and training. Track attendance and student participation in after-school tutoring program. Create standardized data collection methods. Communicate with community partners to identify program improvements. Update parent and teacher communication materials. Collaborate with community organizations to identify and procure resources. Plan and implement family engagement opportunities and events. Identify and share opportunities for community and parental engagement in school activities.
Collaborate with the Center to map out a plan for a paid student leadership structure to sustain the Community Engaged Literacy Program post-Transform Mid-Atlantic (TMA) AmeriCorps VISTA.
Identify internal and external funding sources needed to support sustainability. Act as a liaison with community-based organizations.-
