CLASS TITLE: VAN DRIVER

BASIC FUNCTION:
Under the direction of the Transportation Manager, operate a vehicle over designated routes, and on an "as-needed" basis, in accordance with time schedules, picking up and discharging students; provide safe and efficient transportation for District students to and from school, and school-related activities; perform daily inspections and maintenance of vehicle, assist in the loading and unloading of special needs students as necessary.
REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES:
Drive a vehicle, other than a school bus, over designated routes in accordance with specified time schedules and on an as-needed basis, and in accordance with regulations and laws related to pupil transportation in California following specific route and/or specific individualized student pick-up and drop-off instructions.
Pick up and discharge students at established bus stop locations, or residence or care giver locations as directed; report incidents which affect the safety of students.
Maintain vehicle in a safe operating condition through prescribed daily vehicle inspections and driver maintenance including cleaning windows, mirrors, and vehicle interior; check and maintain fuel, oil and water levels; check brakes, brake lights and doors; report mechanical defects and malfunctions to appropriate personnel.
Maintain order and discipline among students in vehicle following District policies and procedures regarding discipline of students, and contact with school officials, parents and the public; interact with parents regarding questions, concerns, disputes.
Instruct students on safety regulations and policies related to passenger conduct; evacuate vehicle in safe and timely manner as needed; conduct periodic evacuations drills as required by law.
Maintain records concerning vehicle maintenance, miles driven, and number of students transported, and other related matters; prepare student conduct , incident and accident reports.
Attend various meetings related to such issues as safety, first aid, and vehicle codes; attend driver training programs to maintain current knowledge of California Motor Vehicle Code and the Education Code as it applies to the operation of pupil transportation vehicles.

Assist in modifying routes as needed due to the addition or deletion of passengers.
Operate a district vehicle to pick-up and deliver supplies and materials as assigned.
Utilize two-way radio for vehicle-to-dispatch, and vehicle-to-vehicle communication.
Perform first aid according to established guidelines and procedures.
Perform related duties as assigned.

up and discharging students, or on an as-need basis.
Maintain order and discipline among students while driving a vehicle.
Maintain assigned vehicle in a clean and safe operating condition.
Recognize equipment malfunctions and take appropriate action.
Learn designated routes including school site, drop-off locations and traffic hazards.
Maintain routine records.
Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with others.
Understand and follow oral and written directions.
Meet schedules and time lines.
Work independently with little direction.
Communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
Learn, apply and explain rules, regulations, policies and procedures.
Observe legal and defensive driving practices.
Assist in loading special needs students as necessary.
Lift objects weighing up to 40 pounds.
LICENSES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
Valid California Driver's license, insurable by the District liability insurance carrier, successful completion of the First Aid examination within the first six months of employment. Successful completion of District School Bus Driver Training Program, and obtain Class B California driver's license, a School Bus Driver's Certificated issued by the California Highway Patrol, within the first six (6) months of employment.
