Job Summary and Qualifications:


Planning, cooking, preparing foods for service to all customers, including but not limited to all patients and customers of the facility and cafeteria service.

To provide quality customer service to patients by accurately assembling patient trays according to orders and delivering trays according to departments.

To maintain a clean kitchen and handle food items according to HAACP procedures. Performs a variety of food service and dish room tasks. Completes assembly of meal service items. Cleans and removes dirty food from floors and cleans carts and dishware utilizing dish machine. Cleans and sanitizes work area. Performs a variety of cleaning and dish room duties, sweeps, and mops floors. Checks in and puts away stock. Buses tables in the atrium area.

Participates in providing patient specific care standards as directed, and follows service excellence standards to ensure high levels of patient satisfaction.


The Food Service Associate II may be assigned any of the following areas of responsibility: Host/Hostess, Tray line, Porter, Pots and Pans/Dish Room.


Host/Hostess Responsibilities:

  • Must be able to keep all storage areas, refrigerators and freezers clean, neat, and organized.
  • Cover, label, date, food rotation (FIFO) Julian Dates, Cooked over raw, expiration dates.
  • Reports to work well groomed and in compliance with departmental dress code. Wears ID badge when on duty.
  • Maintains proper procedure for delivering tube feedings.
  • Maintains proper procedure for assembling, recording and delivering nourishments.
  • Maintains proper procedures for delivering late meals to nurse supervisor or designated refrigerator.
  • Demonstrates proper procedures for patient meal ticket handling (i.e., highlighting priorities, diabetics).
  • Demonstrates ability to read, interpret and follow patient meal orders.
  • Knowledge of procedures to store foods before, during and after the meals and to be able to maintain these foods at proper temperature (i.e., cover, label, date).
  • Capable of keeping work area clean and uncluttered at all times and ensuring that all equipment is clean.

Tray line Responsibilities:

  • Reviews production sheets to determine types and quantities of salads, desserts, sandwiches, and bar items to be prepared.
  • Follows standardized recipe for production of items.
  • Checks temperatures of items as needed.
  • Completes accurately in preparing the number requested.
  • Prepares and portions desserts, salads, and sandwiches for patient meals, inclusive of needs of modifies diets.
  • Prepares desserts, salads, items for café bars, fruit bars, and specialty bar as needed.
  • Prepares sandwiches and items needed for late trays.
  • Utilize recommended garnishes for product.
  • Follows the City of Austin, Texas Department of Health, and JCAHO standards for food production, food service, and
