Job Summary
The Teacher Expert Migrant Education Student Student/Parent Liaison coordinates with classroom teachers, administrators, parents, and outside agencies to provide enhanced instructional opportunities for children and youth in the Migrant Education Program. The teacher expert provides supplemental instructional support to high school students through demonstrating or modeling appropriate materials, technology, and resources to help meet the learning needs of all students. The teacher expert creates a flexible high school age program based on subject matter taught and an environment favorable to learning and personal growth where effective rapport with students can be established. The teacher expert motivates students to develop skills, attitudes, and knowledge needed to provide a good foundation for preparation for college, vocational school, or employment, in accordance with each student's ability. This position also establishes good relationships with parents and with other staff members. The teacher expert plans, develops, and/or adapts family literacy, parent outreach, and training activities designed to assist parents in becoming active participants in the education of their children. The expert provides professional support to classroom teachers and school staff working with youth and families. This position reports to and is evaluated by the director of Indigenous and Migrant Education. The position has a flexible calendar to start or end work up to three weeks before or after the school year.This position requires a valid Alaska educator certificate. The number of work days is based upon the AEA negotiated pay scale. Information on the pay scale can be found online on our . Positions that are 0.50 FTE to 1.0 FTE are associated with the Alaska Teachers' Retirement System (TRS), positions that are 0.40 to 0.49 FTE are associated with the Alaska Employees' Retirement System (PERS). Positions that are 0.39 FTE or less are not eligible for state retirement benefits.

The physical demands of this job require frequent standing, walking, sitting, speaking and hearing. Specific visual abilities are also required. The employee is regularly required to reach with his/her hands and arms and occasionally lift items weighing less than 40 lbs. Additionally, the employee must be able to understand vague and implicit instructions, be able to readily recall facts and details, handle conflict and make effective decisions under pressure. The employee must have the ability to effectively manage the stress of working with students, parents, and other employees representing diverse cultures, personalities, and work styles in a dynamic work environment.
