We are currently seeking a student assistant for the Department of Ecology of Communities and Ecosystems at the IGB in Berlin-Friedrichshagen, located at Lake Müggelsee.

With over 300 employees and guests from all over the world, we investigate the fundamental processes in aquatic systems and their communities.

You would be working on a project that examines the growth and toxin production of the alga Prymnesium parvum. This alga caused a massive fish kill in the Oder River last summer. We want to understand under which environmental conditions this alga grows and what controls its toxin synthesis. This knowledge will help with targeted and sustainable water management.


Your tasks:


  • Working with algal cultures in the laboratory
  • Preparation of nutrient media with varying salt concentrations and nutrient levels
  • Measurement of algal biomass and photosynthesis
  • Data processing

Your profile:


  • You are enrolled as a student, ideally with a focus on biology, life sciences, biotechnology, or a related field.
  • You have ideally gained some experience in a biological laboratory (
