This is a unique opportunity to join the Community Air Monitoring South Section as an Air Pollution Specialist (APS) within the California Air Resources Board's (CARB) Monitoring and Laboratory Division (MLD).

This position will support the Green House Gas (GHG), Short Lived Climate Pollutant (SLCP) and Ceilometer Networks located throughout the State.

The Community Air Monitoring South Section conducts air monitoring projects utilizing traditional and non-traditional air monitoring technologies and methods.

The section is responsible for conducting community air monitoring campaigns and related community and district outreach to support the Agency's goals.

Sampling/monitoring is conducted in communities to survey neighborhoods for adverse air quality impacts from nearby industrial facilities and other sources.

In addition, the section is responsible for the operation and maintenance of the statewide GHG, SLCP, and Ceilometer Networks.

This APS position will act as GHG, SLCP, and Ceilometer Network lead. The position will deploy, operate, and maintain the GHG, SLCP and ceilometer instrumentation located throughout the state. The position is responsible for routine calibrations of the equipment along with acquisition of the appropriate standards.

The position will set up and maintain data logging communications at each site and be responsible for reviewing and evaluating data from the GHG, SLCP and Ceilometer Networks, conducting quality control measures and reporting the resulting data.


This position also requires the employee to possess a valid California driver's license, occasionally use personal transportation for business, and to maintain certification in first aid/CPR and defensive driver training.

Duties require participation in the DMV Pull Notice Program. Travel may be required up to 30% of the time.


The use of safety footwear, hardhats, goggles, gloves, and other personal protective equipment are required for this position as determined to be appropriate by the supervisor, Health and Safety Officer, and as field safety circumstances dictate.

Working Conditions

This position may be eligible for hybrid in-office work and in-state telework.

The amount of telework is at the agency's discretion and is based on the California Air Resource Boards' (CARB) current telework policy.

While the CARB may support telework, some in-person attendance is also required.

  • Requires being stationary, consistent with office work, for extended periods.
  • Standard office environment (artificial lighting, controlled temperature, etc.)
  • Daily use of a personal computer, office equipment, and/or telephone.
  • Requires repetitive movement of heavy objects.
  • Duties require participation in the DMV Pull Notice Program.
  • Must be able to move/transport equipment weighing up to 50 pounds, with or without reasonable accommodation.
  • Outdoor tasks such as: Climbing wall mounted and extension ladders to access rooftops, working at heights, working near roadways and working in noisy areas, working in the dark, working during hot or inclement weather.

Pay:
$5, $10,903.00 per month
