Position Summary:


  • Start peripheral IVs as well as access Port-ACaths
  • Administer chemotherapy infusions and injections under doctor's supervision
  • Administer therapeutic infusions and injections under doctor's supervision
  • Administer rheumatology infusions and injections under doctor's supervision
  • Administer pulmonology injections under doctor's supervision
  • Perform therapeutic and quantitative phlebotomies
  • Perform lab draws and port draws for blood work
  • Monitor patients while receiving medications, including blood pressure as required by regimen; monitor for allergic reactions during infusions.
  • Document start and stop times, doses, and method of administration for drugs patients receive
  • Calculate ANC, creatinine clearance as necessary
  • Instruct patients, print and provide education about their treatment under doctor's supervision
  • Pull chemotherapy charts, verify labs have come in, and prepare chart for doctor
  • Call in prescriptions for pre/post chemotherapy patients
  • Obtain authorization for CT/PET scans, MRIs, Bone Density scans, and Mammograms
  • Relay orders for radiology and labs for chemotherapy patients to proper facility
  • Monitor inventory of medical supply stock as well as snacks/drinks for patients and report needs to Practice Administrator
  • Calculate and verify medication doses with pharm tech prior to administration
  • Sanitize RN station, including IV pumps
  • Assist patients back and forth from restroom
  • File materials in charts and pull charts as necessary
  • Triage patient phone calls
  • Schedule all chemotherapy, iron, and phlebotomy appointments including necessary MD followup appointments
  • Provide psychosocial support for patients and patients' families
  • Obtain and keep Chemotherapy and Biotherapy Certification

  • Maintains responsibility for own professional development.

Position Duties/Responsibilities:


  • Demonstrates proficiency in the care of patients in the Oncology Services Department
  • Maintains ability to perform competencies as described above
  • Demonstrates the knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span and the skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served
  • Is able to assess and interpret data about patients' statuses to identify specific needs and provide the care needed to the appropriate level
  • Documents care through appropriate charting and care planning

Essential Functions:


  • The ability to be able to walk or stand for long periods of time.
  • The ability to transfer patients.
  • The ability to have fine motor control of hands and fingers.
  • Maintains nursing license following the Scope of Practice for Registered Nursing.
  • Demonstrates the ability to function as a team member within the unit and the nursing department.
  • Demonstrates the ability to have positive personal interactions with staff, patients, visitors and physicians.
  • Accepts appropriate supervision.
  • Communicates concerns appropriately using the established chain of command.

Position Qualifications:


  • Education: Current California license as an RN.
  • Experience: Accessing Port-ACaths and starting peripheral IVs.
  • Skills/Ability: Current knowledge of the care of the Oncology Services Department patients within a reasonable time after hire. Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Computer skills preferred. Exhibits the ability to organize work assignments and follow through with accuracy. Exercises good judgment, demonstrates initiative, emotional stability, tact and poise.
