Basic Function:

The Community Organizer will lead CIDNY's efforts to mobilize people with disabilities who use the paratransit system, Access-a-Ride (AAR).

They will identify, reach out to, and maintain communication with individuals and organizations interested in working systemically to improve the paratransit system.

In addition, this organizer will investigate voting accessibility and advocate for all varieties of disability inclusion to further support and promote the independence of people with disabilities to ensure their interests are represented through all levels of government.


Specific Duties:


  • Plan and implement an outreach campaign to identify, in conjunction with the Director of Advocacy.
  • Recruit people with disabilities who are AccessaRide users, have applied to use the system, or have a history of using the system to testify at MTA Board meetings and State and City public hearings.
  • Work with Directors of Advocacy and Communications to develop/improve promotional material and recruitment tools.
  • Survey AAR applicants and users about their experiences with the program on the phone, in person, and/or using online instruments.
  • Disseminate rider and applicant's rights information developed in conjunction with project partners.
  • Participate in weekly supervision.
  • Engage in Advocacy Department initiatives and prepare updates for the Director and fellow CIDNY staff.
  • Document all program activities in CIDNY's database accurately and promptly.
  • Provide training on AAR procedures, complaints and appeals, and selfadvocacy to individuals with disabilities and CIDNY staff and other organizations that may have AAR users and/or applicants.
  • Distribute educational materials directly and through websites and social media to AAR users, communitybased groups, and providers.
  • Organize participation in a project story bank identifying barriers to service and to the effectiveness of the AAR system and opinions regarding improvements that could be made.
  • Work with CIDNY's Director of Advocacy & Health Policy, Director of Communications, and project partners to develop and implement strategies for advocacy campaigns that include grassroots outreach and organizing efforts, utilizing eadvocacy and webbased tools and communications.
  • Activate the AAR riders group directly and through an alert system when authorized by the Director of Advocacy.
  • Perform other programrelated duties as assigned.

Education and Training:


BA or BS Degree with at least three (3) years of proven experience in recruiting, training, motivating, and developing volunteer activists.


Experience:


  • Demonstrated commitment to civil rights, including disability rights.
  • Experience in planning, organizing, and implementing grassroots advocacy campaigns, including effective outreach, recruitment, and mobilization techniques and strategies.
  • Experience utilizing eadvocacy and webbased tools and communications.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills, including experience in preparing and delivering public presentations.
  • Ability to work independently and cooperatively with staff, volunteers, and consumers in a culturally diverse environment. Proficiency in another language other than English (including ASL) is a plus.
  • Team player with effective interpersonal skills, such as leadership and team building.
  • Ability to design a work plan, prioritize and meet goals.
  • Familiarity or experience with issues that impact the lives of people with disabilities.
  • Experience with database systems is highly desirable. Knowledge of Word, Goldmine, Access and Excel programs is also desirable.
  • Bilingual, preferred.

Travel demands:

Temporarily remote due to COVID-19, requires traveling for presentations, protest/lobbying events, etc.

Working Environment:

The Community Organizer will spend some of their work time in CIDNY'S, NY office. The work area is shared, and the workspace is divided into cubicles. Verbal communication can be heard from other staff in adjoining cubicles. Must wear a mask at all times.
