Communications Coordinator

Grade: 114 -FLSA: Non-Exempt | Full Time | Benefit Eligible


Salary:
$60,417 - $70,064 (commensurate with experience)


NATURE OF WORK


The Communications Coordinator supports the City's marketing, communication, and customer service strategies through digital and social media, print publications, video production, and working with members of the press.


As a member of the City's Communications Team, this position works closely with the City's Communications Manager and Specialist to increase public awareness of City programs and services in the areas of Community Services, Economic Development, Public Works, City Administration, and more.

The Coordinator will oversee regular updates of the City's website at , social media, and other online platforms to increase community engagement.

Additional duties include assisting with communications content planning and development, participating in City video projects, drafting press releases and speaking with members of the press, and supporting City Departments with event communications and outreach.

This position reports to the City's Communications Manager/Public Information Officer and works closely with the City's Communications Specialist.


ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Provides direct support to the Communications Department by communicating the City's message to the public and media through various communication channels;
  • Assists with monthly crossdepartmental meetings to maintain a calendar of upcoming events, programs, and resources for promotion;
  • Drafts, updates, and edits web content on ;
  • Provides social media support, including brainstorming and creating content, and scheduling posts for social media, monitoring partner accounts and sharing relevant content with followers;
  • Supports the drafting and publishing of City print newsletters, mailers, flyers and signage;
  • Helps coordinate internal communications for City of Hyattsville staff members;
  • Attends City events to communicate during the event through social media channels and other methods;
  • Drafts press releases and speaks with members of the media as needed, and supports annual media trainings for City Staff and Council;
  • Assists with logistics and informational materials for press events; ribbon cuttings, groundbreakings, and other media events.
  • Assists with emergency communications as needed.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Outstanding verbal and written communications skills with fluency in both English and Spanish preferred;
  • Experience with government or organizational communications planning;
  • Experience managing an organizational social media account, including oversight of social media analytics and scheduling tools (e.g., Facebook/Instagram Business Manager, Twitter Analytics, Hootsuite);
  • Understanding of best practices for social media marketing, plain language, and digital accessibility;
  • Knowledgeable with graphic design software such as Canva and Adobe InDesign;
  • Ability to work with multiple teams and manage several tasks simultaneously, prioritize work, solve problems, and meet deadlines;
  • Excellent customer service skills;
  • Desire to learn about and/or previous work experience in local government (or similar public sector organization);
  • Creative, collaborative, and flexible with an eye for detail.

WORK SCHEDULE
Work hours are typically between the business hours of 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., however this position will require occasional support of evening or weekend events. A hybrid work schedule is authorized for this position at the discretion of the supervisor.


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Education and Experience: 35 years of professional experience in a position related to communications, marketing, journalism, public relations, or a related field.
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered, or any acceptable equivalent combination of education, experience, and training that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING ENVIRONMENT
Work requires walking, standing, bending, carrying items under 20 pounds, such as books, files, papers, etc.
