    Local Area Network (LAN) Engineer Media and Technology Department

    Job Description

    General Statement of Job: Under general supervision, the employee is responsible for supporting, designing, and implementing local area networks and internal services in the school district. The employee supervises the installation, maintenance, and operation of a local area network and associated hardware and software. The employee coordinates with the Director of Technology the evaluation of school system networking needs and recommends improvements and modifications to the existing infrastructure. The employee diagnoses and resolves complex local area network issues. The role requires a service oriented mentality, high sense of ownership of the problems, and a focus on managing and resolving issues in alignment with the goals of Lenoir County Public Schools. The employee establishes and maintains communication with stakeholders to keep them updated with the status of their requests, responding to related alerts, performing updates and changes on production systems, and proactively escalating any issues that cannot be resolved within the established timeframes. Employee reports to the Director of Technology

    Specific Duties and Responsibilities:
    • Designs and implements local area networks including network servers, switches, workstations, and other peripheral devices.
    • Operates and maintains local area networks, tracks significant problems, monitors performance, and performs upgrades to hardware and software as required,
    • Maintains documentation regarding network configurations, server configurations, operating procedures, and service records relating to network hardware and software.
    • Installs or modifies existing installations of networked computer hardware, software, and other components.
    • Participates in long- and short-range technology planning,
    • Terminates and installs network cabling in accordance with industry standards.
    • Trains technical staff at the system and building level to follow proper operating procedures necessary to maintain the integrity of the network.
    • Works with vendors and vendor support staff in support of the infrastructure of Lenoir County Public Schools.
    • Maintains accurate records including device tracking, digital learning inventory management, and utilizing the work order system.
    • Attends classes, seminars, conferences and reviews professional literature to enhance knowledge of trends and developments related to wide and local area network systems.
    • Administers the Mobile Device Management (MDM) system the work of and reviews and to wide
    • Stays abreast of mobile device management technology developments and leverages as necessary to improve domain and enterprise-wide technical perspectives, standards, and solutions.
    • Enforces mobile device policies and procedures in accordance with the digital learning intuitive and the goals of Lenoir County Public Schools.
    • Receives installation needs and requests for additional network server projects, determine the scope of project and appropriateness, review users needs and help determine implementation schedules if approved,
    • Performs daily network administration tasks such as creating user ids, maintaining groups, enabling printer sharing, managing server security and backups.
    • Tests and documents device and software auditing.
    • Creates, packages, tests and deploys software packages.
    • Maintains software license agreements and inventory of server equipment as required.
    • Manages and locks mobile devices for lost or stolen hardware.
    • Communicates effectively with all levels of technology users.
    • Installs network servers, workstations, printers, and other peripheral devices
    • Lifts, carries, and moves devices and peripheral equipment as needed.
    Additional Job Functions:

    Performs other related work as required.

    Minimum Training and Experience:

    Graduation from a four-year college or technical school with coursework on Computer Science,

    OR a related field with coursework in networking and two years of network experience including wide area networks, and supervisory training or experience;

    OR an associate's degree in Computer Science or related field, two years' experience in a local area network environment, supervisory training or experience, or any equivalent combination of training and experience.

    Minimum Qualifications or Standards Required to Perform Essential Job Functions
    • Knowledge of networking protocols
    • Experience with network environments,
    • Experience with network management utilities.
    • Certification in network operating system's software such as Novell Administrator, Novell Engineer, or Microsoft Engineer, other appropriate hardware certifications such as Cisco, or any equivalent combination of training, certification, and/or experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
    • Must be physically able to operate a variety of equipment and tools.
    • Must be able to exert up to 30 lbs of force occasionally and/or up to 5 pounds of force frequently to constantly move objects.
    Other Requirements:
    • Must maintain an acceptable attendance record and be punctual.
    • Must possess a valid driver's license issued by the State of North Carolina.
    Additional Job Functions:
    • Perform other related work as required by the Director of Media and Technology.
