- Instructs swimming lessons to individuals with special needs as assigned in accordance with YMCA guidelines, having prepared lesson plans accordingly.
- Maintains records as required (i.e. attendance, progress reports, etc.).
- Attends staff meetings and trainings as scheduled.
- Organizes and puts away needed class equipment. Reports damaged equipment.
- Trains and supervises class aides and volunteers as assigned.
- May be asked to attend community events sharing information on Drowning Prevention
- Conveys information on aquatics programs and schedules and as appropriate refers members and participants to other YMCA programs.
- Follows all YMCA policies, rules, regulations and procedures, including emergency and safety procedures. Completes incident and accident reports as necessary.
- May be asked to conduct classroom based water safety education to children and/or adults
- Encourages participant involvement and identifies potential volunteers.
- Certifications: CPR for the Professional Rescuer, AED, Basic First Aid certification.
- Previous experience working with Individuals with Special Needs (required)
- Previous experience working with Individuals with Special Needs in swimming lessons or swim coaching (preferred)
- Must be able to demonstrate swim instructor skills in accordance with YMCA standards.
- YMCA Swim Instructor certification or previous experience teaching swimming.
- At least 16 years of age.
- Ability to instruct and observe participants in proper stroke techniques
- Ability to lift equipment, and to lift a small to average size child
