    Research Assistant - Department of Surgery

    Essential functions (job duties):
    Perform laboratory based scientific techniques or clinical/population science (human subjects) research. Design and perform experiments, recruit participants for studies by developing surveys and interviewing candidates. Participate in implementing research objectives, ensuring compliance with all legal, regulatory and protocol guidelines. Assist staff with experiments/research protocols as required. Communicate with principal investigator and Postdoctoral scholars/fellows on the status of research.

    Collect and log laboratory results, clinical outcomes and/or survey data.

    Evaluate and perform data analysis using graphs, charts or tables to highlight the key points of the research results collected in accordance with the research protocols as stipulated.

    P roofread and edit research data and documents to ensure accuracy.

    Assist principal investigator with writing methods and summarizing/organizing data to be used in preparing and presenting presentations for professional, scientific and academic conferences and submittal to academic and scholarly peer-reviewed journals.

    Maintain the laboratory work areas including routine maintenance on laboratory equipment as required. Order and organize required research supplies and records. Maintain cleanliness and organization of work station.


    Unique duties:


    Under the guidance of the Principal Investigator, offer scientific and technical support to facilitate laboratory-based, clinical, or population science research.

    Contribute to drafting research protocols and preparing manuscripts. Independently design and execute research protocols, including more complex or specialized procedures as required by the research objectives.

    Conduct research in the following areas:
    targeted therapy and molecular biology of pancreatic and ovarian cancers. They work with the Principal Investigator (PI) to analyze data and prepare scientific manuscripts for publication. Exceptional organization and the ability to independently conduct research projects are essential.

    Proficiency is required in the application and troubleshooting of state-of-the-art techniques in molecular and cellular biology, including recombinant DNA technology, lentiviral and other gene and shRNA expression systems, cell invasion and proliferation assays, and microscopy.

    Duties also include conducting mammalian cell culture work to understand maturation signals needed for dendritic cells and T cells and conducting experiments to generate CAR T cells to understand immune inhibitory signals by cancer cells.

    These experiments involve flow cytometry, electrophoresis, and western blot analysis on a regular basis.

    They will also take research materials to Wayne State University (WSU) and Karmanos Cancer Institute (KCI) core facilities for analysis when needed.

    This position involves assisting the Principal Investigator with writing methods and summarizing/organizing data for presentations at professional, scientific, and academic conferences, as well as submission to academic and scholarly peer-reviewed journals.


    Qualifications:

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
    Education Bachelor's degree

    Bachelor's degree in a related field of study, preferred. Requires advanced knowledge

    predominantly intellectual in character in a field of science or learning acquired by a prolonged

    course of specialized intellectual instruction.

    Experience Entry level (less that a year of job-related experience)

    Experience performing basic research techniques or interacting with human subjects, preferred.

    Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

    Proactive mindset and adept at working autonomously.

    Proficient in analyzing and interpreting research findings and data presented in reports and spreadsheets, with the capability to effectively communicate results.

    Demonstrates outstanding time management and organizational abilities. Possesses excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with a proven track record of collaborating effectively in team environments. Proficient in Microsoft Office and other essential software tools and applications


    Preferred qualifications:
    MS degree in the fields of molecular biology, biochemistry, or physiology.

    Individuals with a strong background in cellular molecular biology and gene therapy are preferred, particularly those with expertise in flow cytometry.

    Certification in phlebotomy is encouraged for applicants. EXPERIENCE - 3 to 5 years Candidates with certification in Phlebotomy are preferred.

    The role includes maintaining laboratory work areas, performing routine maintenance on laboratory equipment, ordering, and organizing required research supplies, and maintaining cleanliness and organization of the workstation.
